Clear Institute vs. Schroth Method

I just wanted to let everyone know that I've now done my Schroth exercises for 6 days in a row (with one day off in between). They are a little tricky to get the hang of at first, but I think I have a very good handle on them now (my boyfriend, who luckily is a personal trainer and good with this kind of "muscle stuff", was helping me the first few days, and now i'm doing them totally on my own). I can honestly say my back, shoulders, and neck feel waaaay better already than they did when I was doing my yoga/PT stuff before learning Schroth. I really feel like I'm slowly getting stronger (overall and on my concave side), and it's easier for me to stand up straighter, etc. Just wanted to keep everyone up to date! I have a massage appointment (I go every 3 weeks) this Friday (5/29), so I'll keep you posted after that...the woman that massages me has an excellent handle on my body since I've been going to her for quite a while, so she'll be able to tell if things are loosening up easier, moving more freely, etc.

Because he's a friend, and because SLS stated: "Her orthopedic recommended the Scoliosis Rehab Center to us at her last visit. He considers surgery to always be the very last resort and truly feels Schroth Therapy works."

I had not heard any scoliosis specialists state that they thought Schroth (or other alternatives) "worked," and I wanted to get his take.

I feel it's very important for people to have the whole truth about all scoliosis treatments. When people come here and try to convince others to try some unproved treatment (not that SLS did), it's my job to make certain that these forums don't get inundated with false information.

His feeling is that it could be beneficial, but of course there are no guarantees. I did edit my original post.

Anyhow, this afternoon, I met with the two main therapists from the Scoliosis Rehab Clinic at my daughters orthopedists office. They are two incredible women. They spent the entire day with the doctor and at the end of the day, they gave a presentation/talk about the Schroth method and spoke briefly about their clinic. The doctor spoke as well. He had invited several of his patients and their parents. I was impressed at the relationship between the doctor and the therapists. Not either one gave any promises, and both agreed that it is critical to maintain a relationship between the patient, therapists and orthopedist, if this method of therapy (or any therapy for that matter, I would believe) is chosen.

He did say, that except for some time and money, there is nothing to lose from Schroth, and until there are actually studies, which would take many, many years, to know if it actually works. I left with a very positive feeling and am more so looking forward to our visit.

As an added bonus, Joseph P. O'Brien, President, CEO & Patient of the National Scoliosis Foundation was there with them. What an incredibly nice man. He went around the room, personally introduced himself to everyone and shook their hand.

I feel very positive and am excited about the direction we are moving in.

Yeah ... I was wondering who decided anyone was wrong about the 20 year old, self-proclaimed nationally ranked, 5'10" figure skater who claimed Spinecor corrected her skeletally mature curve ...

CD ... maybe you think she (and I use that term loosely ... I still think it was Deutschmann) deserved more credit, but you also haven't heard the drivel we have ... and you're far more open to alt modalities than the veterans.

That's your choice, but don't say "we" were wrong about the figure skater. "We've" seen her type of story more times than we care to count.

CD. my x-rays weren't stolen ... my surgery presentation (that I thought would be of benefit here) was stolen by a rat **tard chiro in Palo Alto who used my photos as proof of the horrible, awful surgery you'd need if you didn't let him cure you ...

I don't know. I doubt she was made out of whole cloth and that Deutschman hired a blond actress to do the video.

A major doubt source is that her claim doesn't square with the list of nationally/internationally ranked skaters. For me, if you shade the truth there maybe you are shading the truth about your comments in re Spinecor. But the woman was so genuinely clueless in her posts and in the video that I think it rules out that she is a hired actress and that Deutschman wrote the posts. I could be wrong by I assume Deutschman knows a bit more than that and would have coached her more for the video if she was acting.

I don't have the patience to review what the skater claimed but I doubt she is claiming a permanent reduction because she is still in the brace, yes? If she is then she is truly, truly clueless.

IMHO, we need more straight shooters like Pam around here who are not afraid to raise questions or voice opinions that might not be popular with some members. Even when Pam has not agreed with MY opinion on something, I have always respected the fact that she's honest.

Pam, Pam, Pam, good to see you back. I too missed you. You sure have a way of livening up this place.

Regarding the figure skater, well, I dunno, but when I saw the youtube video she made I sort of figured you were wrong about her. Was she nationally ranked? – I don’t think it matters. Was she a real person coming on this site to discuss her scoliosis? – I think yes. Was she chased away? I think yes. Should it serve as a cautionary lesson when the next person comes on here who, while perhaps misinformed about some things, is genuinely looking for some community support for her shared experience? I think Yes.

You say I am “far more open to Alt modalities than the veterans”. I don’t know about that. We’re not pursuing any exercise therapy right now (although some of Dingo’s posts on the matter are pretty interesting). Maybe I’m just more open to people in general (although I wrongly accused EmmsMom of being a shill when she first got here). But Pam, you’re going to love this quote coming from me, ‘cause I know you think I am naïve, but I remember watching the Disney movie Pollyanna with my daughter when she was a toddler. The relevant line that stuck with me is:

“If you look for the worst in people expecting to find it, you usually do.”

I think that quote applies to the case of our figure skater who many people here figured was a phony. I think her youtube testimonial at least strongly suggests that she is a real person. Nationally ranked? Is that detail really important (and has it been disproved?).

I think it also applies to your criticism of chiropractors, especially Lamantia and Deutschmann. You discredited them for their reporting Cobb angles to the nearest 10th. Did you catch the thread where we showed other reputable doctors reporting similarly? Even in the literature! Is it possible your hatred of chiropractors was influenced by what happened to your x-rays? Hate is a pretty strong word. Is it fair to hate them all because of what one did to you? Is it fair to chase away their patients because you don’t like them?

Remind yourself of Danielle’s last post on this forum before you watch her youtube testimonial posted several months later.

I think you are right that people get chased away from this site by the harsh, sarcastic and/or flip responses they get from some, as well as by threads bogged down with back and forth bickering. It's unfortunate, and it would be a good thing for the forum if it stopped. When I first logged on to the forum to learn about Spinecor and VBS, I was so stunned by the pointless contentiousness of those threads (which made them useless to anyone seeking information), that that was very nearly the beginning and end of my forum experience.

Not everyone has to think the same way. Not everyone has to believe the same thing. Not everyone has to have the same experience.

As many say, just my 2 cents.
