Nicely played And they wonder why we have MISI (Media-Induces Scientific Illiteracy)
My son at one point offered me this summary of science articles about chimps.
"Have you read many of these science articles on chimps? There's something so weird about them. They all follow the exact same formula.
Paragraph One: 'You're not special'. General introduction to how intuitive human common sense believes we're significantly different from other animals - wrong, sucker!
Paragraph Two: 'Citation of loss of humanity'. 'Now according to a study in etc...'/'But scientists working at the ... institute in ... have discovered that', etc. Paragraph culminates in the sudden and startling revelation of yet another attribute we share with the Beast.
Paragraph Three+: 'The Science Portion of the Science Article'. A strange jumble of forgettable names, places, times and dates that usually leaves you with some sense that the original claim in Paragraph Two is correct, but now also with a few numbers you can't really place to anything. Chimps wage war - and killed 13 chimps.
Final Paragraphs: 'But Beasts don't have a moral code!': Always the epilogue to these - a strange jumble of moral affirmation of the uniqueness of man, citation of some random animal species that we could aspire to be like, and speech of human destiny. The contradictions inherent within these paragraphs alone are never addressed, let alone how they work with the first part of the article that claimed some animals were just and altruistic."

And for a look at the generic news for an understanding of our illiteracy in every other area (warning to the faint of heart, there's some cursing)

That's pretty good.
And certain school boards, no names but it's Texas, Kansas, Ohio, Dover area inter alia, stacked with "geniuses," are doing their damndest to make kids even more ignorant about science.
Among 34 first world countries, only Turkey has a more scientifically ignorant populace than the U.S....

You are either part of the solution or part of the problem. We, as a society, can do better. Much better.Sharon, mother of identical twin girls with scoliosis

Only a minuscule part of the land mass is technically European - maybe that's the source of confusion. Heh, my children's great grandmother was convinced the Earth rested on top of a giant tortoise. That tops Intelligent Design any day!Not all diagnosed (still having tests and consults) but so far:
Ehler-Danlos (hyper-mobility) syndrome, 69 - somehow,
main curve L Cobb 60, compensating T curve ~ 30
Flat back, marked lumbar kyphosis (grade?) Spondilolisthesis - everyone gives this a different grade too. Cervical stenosis op'd 3-07, minimally invasive

Well I may have described that grouping of countries incorrectly as "first world." Not sure.
The point is the US is getting our collective derrières handed to us and we are the laughing stock of the world on this issue.
What's far less funny is how we will lose our scientific, not to mention our scintific, edge if this continues.
And what's least funny is that the Texas school board, repeat offenders in this category, seems to want to churn out the most scientifically ignorant kids in the country. Other states will not go along with it and there will be a set of textbooks to dumb down Texan kids and another set to smarten up the rest of the country.
Texas wants to own the intellectual basement on this issue and they are trying their damnedest at the expense of innocent school kids. They should be ashamed.Sharon, mother of identical twin girls with scoliosis
