I was wondering if anyone has done pilates and/or yoga after revision surgery, specifically revision surgery for flatback syndrome?
Thanks!

Yes,
I do a modified type of Pilates at a Pilates studio with individual lessons.
This cannot be done at a regular Gym because Pilates is a specific disclipline which was originally used on war injured by its founder Joseph Pilates.
Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction
There is a yoga instructor, Ellen Kiley, who has had revision surgery and is fused to the sacrum. I went to a yoga workshop she taught last fall in Maine and two other women there had had revisions. It was quite life changing. She has a website, www.scoliyogi.com, and occasionally has workshops on the East Coast (where, unfortunately, I do not live). I am still struggling a bit with yoga (I'm fused from T1 to L3- no revision) mostly I think because of disc problems below the fusion. I am trying different yoga studios in my area -tyryng not to push myself. I would imagine that Pilates could be great for those of us with fused spines if you could find a good way to modify it. I think it can be so hard to keep our muscles strong when the spine doesn't move.
I have been having a lot of pain below my fusion (fusion from T3-L2) in the area of my last two remaining flexible vertebra. I was wondering if anyone else has has a problem with their spine below their fusion, and what they have done to help with the pain? I am hoping that there are some exercises that I can do to help build my core strength. I am very afraid of surgery again, but it will happen soon? Is there anyone else dealing with this type of pain? Please help!
Hi AACY, I was having similar problems prior to my last surgery. A CT scan showed severe stenosis and other problems. I also developed Flatback syndrome. I found that yoga helped with the stretching, breathing and relaxing, as did swimming, massage therapy and PT, however, in the end, surgery was the only option to help with my problems. Hopefully you can find something that works. Have you tried massage therapy or physio? Have you spoken to a specialist? Take care.
