    family member donations...

My husband was going to donate a pint for me (he's O neg and can donate to anyone) however, we were told at the Red Cross donation center on the day of my donation that the cost for him to make a directed donation for my surgery was going to be around $400/pint. They said that the charges come from the hospital and are to cover the costs for them to store and hold the blood aside specifically for my surgery (Red Cross only takes approx. $50 of the amount charged). We had no idea about the charge before that day, so if you are planning to have a family member donate for you, check with your local Red Cross in advance and maybe even your insurance co. to see if they will cover the cost of the donation. We decided against the directed donation and my husband gave his usual donation to the blood bank instead.

I donated one pint and needed 2 during my surgery and 2 more four days later during a transfusion to help increase my blood oxygen levels.
