I think people mean well, but are not educated about scoliosis. When they ask if I'm in pain and I tell them ,"No", they really think I'm nuts for electing to have this surgery. No one can believe that I can give up golf for a year. It's easy to second guess yourself, but I try to believe I'm doing the right thing.

Thanks fellow forumers (someone else just used that term and I like it!) for YOUR 2 cents. I was pretty upset when I wrote my post because some of my co-workers were just learning of my upcoming surgery on my last day at the office and were overwhelming me a bit with their comments. I work with a physician and even he was shocked at what I was doing...not in so many words but the look on his face. Yes, I think some of the people mean well and are trying to understand what/why I'm doing this. I almost felt like bending over in front of them and showing my back.

But like I told a friend of mine, no one knows what it's been like walking around in my shoes for the past 35+ years with this deformity and feeling like a turtle, hiding in my shell. Now the pain and losing the ability to do some of my favorite things like gardening has made me "fess up" to something that I've hidden so long. The secret it out and I feel some sense of relief about that.
