If the body suffers from malnutrition you are 100% correct. Lifespan will be cut short. But in calorie restriction the body gets everything it needs, just not in large doses.

However I'm not sure if EXTRA vitamins/minerals/etc improves health.

That being said I eat lots of fruits, vegetables, beans, drink green tea, take fish oil, etc. etc. etc. just to be on the safe side.

the monkey study is fascinating. Thanks for posting. It's really great to be able to see the long term affects since typically we look at over-eating only in relation to being overweight, not necessarily all the less immediate or less visual affects that go along with that. I am not overweight, but could certainly get away with eating a lot less. And surprisingly I think that would be a lot more manageable for me than cutting out entire food groups.
Give it a shot! With calorie restriction you don't have to reach a particular low level before the health benefits start. It's dose dependent. Even a little helps a little.

Depending on someone's physical size and activity level 1500 to 2000 calories per day is roughly equal to what was done in the animal studies. But even 2000 to 2500 is less than what much of the adult population in the USA consumes. One meal at a restaraunt can easily approach 2000 calories.
