I saw my surgeon this morning and asked him if I had a non-union would it be apparent by now, and he said yes. And looking at my fresh x-rays he said he sees a solid fusion. I asked him if infections can occur several years after surgery and he said yes and that’s why he favors long-term use of prophylactics prior to any dental treatment and for those who are prone to urinary tract infections. I don’t get UTIs but I do alternate between seeing my dentist and periodontist every four months and will be taking prophylactics for the rest of my life. My surgeon also remarked that more surgeons who are doing hip and knee replacements are rethinking short-term use of prophylactics in favor of long-term use.
