    • Went good today. Went over all my questions with my surgeon and confirmed the surgical approach. Talked about everything and felt confident in him. Got everything I needed, then headed to the outpatient surgery center at the hospital and did my pre-admission test. Had to do an EKG, some blood work, urinalysis, chest x-ray, and nostril swabs. Talked with the head orthopedic nurse who is very familiar with these spine surgeries, and she was extremely kind and helpful. Went over everything again, and told me how everything should go. A lot of cool new things to use at that hospital compared to my Stanford experience.

Will be using a catheter this time for surgery. I did not have a catheter at the surgeries at Stanford, and it was bearable, but the 2nd surgery hurt for 1-2 days, but dilaudid was the best thing ever. I'll be getting the catheter and either dilaudid or fentanyl will be used, and I'll have the IV drip with the button as well. So my pain level should be more than bearable. And also 24 hour visit for my family and almost anytime visit for friends, which is nice. I'm ready for surgery, and want to get it over with already. Believe it or not, surgery is next friday lol. This weekend will go quickly with a nice wedding, and in no time it'll be friday! Wish me luck guys. Thanks
      John

            • Hi John

              Good news......

If you can, put in a request for the injectable or IV Lortab....Oh yeah...talk about nirvana. They rotated meds with me, so I never knew what was on the menu. When your NPO, meds are your menu.

Catheters are a drag. You might remember years ago in the gas stations, they would have a rubber hose you would drive over that would activate a bell to notify the gas attendants. Well, catheters are similar. If someone steps on your hose, it will ring your bell. There is a bell in there, it might not be in the anatomy books, but its there. lol

I wonder if talking to them about bringing in some foam for the bed is of value. You remember the hospital bed? Just an idea.

              • Ed, I don't think they'll let you bring in foam b/c of infection risk. When I asked for foam for Elias b/c his circle bed was so hard, they did bring in an egg carton thingy but it was all sealed up in plastic and when we left they tossed it in the garbage.

                • Good thing I deleted the “Don’t forget the foam” from my sig.....(smiley face)

I don’t know why they would have a problem with that. Usually everyone is bandaged up quite well by the time they end up on an orthopedic wing. Hmmm....

A few years ago I watched the research channel when it was on and one surgeon commented about lifting up the back of the bed stressing the construct and fresh fusions. I did like my bed in the flat position when I was in the hospital....Its also impossible to roll onto your side with the bed lifted up.

I know John posted about how bad his bed was and I also complained about mine. It was terrible.

Getting comfortable has to be the #1 complaint after scoliosis surgery.

                  • Yes, my bed was a pita. I think the fact I was in pain and my hips/sides were very bruised up from laying on the operating table for hours, didn't help much in bed. I think when I lay the bed down, it was better. I remember sleeping on a pretty much flat bed. But the thing is, I can't sleep well on my back, so I was hoping to sleep on my stomach, which is nearly impossible lol, and I couldn't do sides from bruising, so it was tough lol. The whole entire orthopedic section was remodeled, so I think it's all new beds as well, which is a plus.

Plus, I got the nurse to order me the "extra long" bed for being 6'5'' hahaha. How awesome is that? Thanks for all the wishes guys, still got 9 more days. Should fly by. Will keep everyone posted.

                    • that's great that you thought of the extra long bed!
sounds like you are covering all the bases this time...
experience helps, too...just having an idea of what you may be dealing with....
                      you sound very prepared...calm, confident....ready!
it is so good to "hear" you sounding that way!

                      • Lol. Well, I didn't "think" of it, she was kind and said she noticed I was tall, and asked me how tall I was, and when I said 6'5'', she said I'll make an order to get a long bed so your feet don't dangle. Very very nice lady. Both surgeons, anesthesiologist, the nurses, etc. are all just awesome. I can't wait to get in and get it over with. I think this recovery will be simpler and easier than Stanford's. Just got to wait patiently. Almost there.

                              • i am so glad that you had a chance to discuss all the details with
the surgeon and the nurses beforehand...
i would guess that it gives you comfort and confidence to have the best possible
idea of what is going to take place in the OR (barring any unforeseen occurrences) i think you have the best knowledge and expectations any patient could have...
it is great that you stuck with all of this..
and you sound like you have a lot more patience than you did at the start of your surgeries....
