  • New brace questions

    Hi -

My 12-yr-old daughter just picked up her TLSO Boston Brace yesterday and we had a few questions for you experienced brace-wearers.

    1. She was ok sleeping in it (thanks to the great advice on this forum about buying a memory foam mattress topper) but she is very uncomfortable sitting in it. The top of the brace seems to press against her sternum. Is this normal and just takes getting used to, or is it something we should get changed? If so, should we go back to the orthotist or to the orthopedic specialist who prescribed the brace? If we lower the brace a little so that it doesn't come up so high in the front, it presses uncomfortably on her hip.

    2. Here's a question we didn't see addressed anywhere!! She wanted to know how to pull her underwear back up under the brace when she used the bathroom!! Embarrassing but important question!!

    Thanks for any advice!

If you need the brace adjusted go back to your orthotist (he/she should be able to address issues of rubbing, hitting in the wrong place, etc.). My daughter pulls the undies over the brace--she tried under and it was a big pain, and not very successful. I got her very stretchy ones from hanes. I think they are the nylon chiffon. They are actually for adults but are teeny when unstretched so they can fit a kid. No one knows they're over, only her.

    Good luck to you

      Hi-

My daughter also has a TSLO brace-it is Cheneau-but my answers may still apply.

Her brace also presses on her sternum, however this is part of her bracing treatment-there is a specific part of her brace that is made to press on her sternum-since her sternum is a bit convex.

She undoes her brace every time she goes to the bathroom. A pain, and keeps her from going as much as she should. But, it is the only way for her to stay comfortable.

      Hope it helps!

Thanks for the replies. We are going to call the orthotist on Monday about the rubbing. Any other thoughts on the other subject??!

When my son wore a brace, I always bought him slightly bigger underwear so he could keep it over the brace.

Alex is 16 years old and in the 11th grade. He has congenital scoliosis due to a hemivertebrae at T10. Wore a TLSO brace for 3 1/2 years. Pre-op curves were T45 & L65; curves post-op are approx. T31 & L34. Had a posterior spinal fusion from T8 to L3 on 7/12/07 at age 12. Doing great now in so many ways, but still working on improving posture.
Zach is 13 years old and very energetic.

If the brace digs into the front of her upper thigh when sitting, the bottom front edge can be shaved or cut down in front. This really makes a difference.

Same here. My son was preschool age basically for the years he wore a brace, and the only thing that seemed to work was wearing underwear over the brace.

                Hello,
My daughter has been wearing her brace for about 2 years now, she is 8. We found that for her what worked best was that she wear what is called under armour, she wears her underpants then the shirt and then the brace over the both. The underarmour helps absorb the sweat really well. We live in Florida where the climate is always HOT! She was getting sores on her skin due to all of the sweating but once we found underarmour, her skin cleared up, so that is the only thing we use. It is expensive but for us it is worth it. Hope this helps in some way...

Oh yeah, I forgot to address question #2, my daughter has to take her brace off to go to the bathroom so when she is finished she pulls her panties on then has to have her brace put back on over her panties and the underarmour.

Yes You Should Return To Get It Adjusted

My daughter got her brace in August. At first she found the sternum uncomfortable and the front of the brace dug into the front of her leg (which after a few weeks started to create a tingling and numbing feeeling in her leg). When we returned for our follow up visit after a month had elapsed, the orthotist trimmed the part that was digging into her leg and also bent the sternum part down. She said it made a world of difference in comfort.

The brace has been fine around the legs. It was pushing up under her bra line uncomfortably, but we took it back and had about an inch removed at the top. Seems much better now.

We go back to the orthopedist in 2-3 weeks for our first in-brace x-rays.

                      Thanks for the suggestions!
