  • Video: Torso Rotation Therapy for Scoliosis

I posted this in the research forum but I thought this might help parents in the watching and waiting forum.

This is a video of an 8 year old doing torso rotation strength training on a MedX machine. Therapy lasts just 4 minutes probably twice per week. The little girl's curve went from 14 degrees to 8 degrees.

If you'd like to read more about this therapy visit the non-surgical thread at this link. I linked to all of the information I am aware of.

    I hope this helps someone.

I saw that, I'm in modified gym class where I can basically do a different activity or if my back hurts take breaks or do something else. My doctor wanted me to do core targeting exercises and my Physical therapist gave me exercises adn stretches awhile ago.
They really can make a difference, the only problem is sometimes I'm in so much pain IDK how I could do the exericises.

I am very happy they found other options, I believe research is helping make Scoliosis treatment different and improved for tomorrow and the future.

Apparently that video is no longer available for some reason.

I tried to find it using wayback with no success.

It was a girl whose small curve decreased from 14* to 8* if I recall correctly coincident with doing the exercises. But small curves like that are known to decrease and even spontaneously resolve on their own while doing absolutely nothing. So it is impossible to say the decrease is due to the torso rotation at this point.

A prominent pediatric neurosurgeon, Dr. Samdani is interviewed briefly on the video. Despite the 6* decrease (+/- 5* of course), he still points out that exercise has not been shown to permanently reduce scoliosis curves. He remains skeptical in other words.

Until torso rotation can show a higher curve regression rate tahn observation for these small curves, it will be impossible to say whether the exercise is doing anything. It might or might not be... we simply don't have the data to know.
