    My Amen

I was "amen"ing ..Dingo's desire for his sons spine to be straight......and I applaud his efforts to attempt various alternative methods while his sons curves are so small. I wish I HAD NOT LISTENED to the "back specialist" with all the Phd.'s behind his name who told me to "WATCH AND WAIT"

People have to start trying some of these "NEW" ideas or my grandkids are going to be stuck with the same miserable options!!!

Hope404, why do you assume these alternatives haven't been tried and even studied?

Did you know one exercise program has been around for at least 90 years and still hasn't ponied up an alternative treatment?

How long do these guys who are pushing alternative treatments need?

The first official study on Torso rotation strength training was released in 2003. A 2nd study was completed in 2006 and a 3rd in 2008. All 3 produced the same results.

Therapists in New Zealand used the same exercises and produced the same results.

This is a brand new concept.

If anybody would like a more readable, html (not pdf) copy of the 2007 study by Mooney et.al, PM me and I'll happily forward it. I managed to find it online, missing only the 2 charts.

"Contrary to current dogma, the condition may be corrected with this therapy -- Exercise for managing adolescent scoliosis"

Vert Mooney , John Mayer , David Woodbridge . The Journal of Musculoskeletal Medicine. March 1, 2007 v24 i3 p107.

The good ole' USofA is way behind, IMO. We have NOTHING to lose by giving these alternative treatments a chance, IF it is something that has some merit behind it. A lot of these alternative therapy's ares widely practiced in other countries because these countries support their people and supply them with superior medical treatment. We are very disadvanteged in America. Our health care system has a long way to go. It's sad...but true.

I am taking my daughter to the Rehab Clinic in Stevens Point in just over a week from now. Her orthopedic is 100% supportive of this choice and will be watching her closely. Maybe (hopefully) it will work, maybe it won't. At the very least it will make her aware of her body and teach her good habits. There is nothing wrong with that.

Amen to the straight spines for our children and sorry about my choice of words re "argue".

    How 'bout discuss?

I love this country. I would not want to live anywhere else on the planet. I am thankful for the many “advantages” we have in this country that so many of us take for granted. God bless America!

    SLS,

I must disagree that we are "disadvantaged" in America as far as health care. I think we are quite fortunate actually. For example, I don't personally know of anyone who has had to leave this country for treatment of any condition; whereas, I have heard of a LOT of folks who have come hear to RECEIVE treatment.

Just in terms of scoliosis alone, I know several patients from other countries (UK, France, Romania, the Middle East, etc.) that have come to see (or consulted with) the doctors from Shriners alone.

With regard to scoliosis, my guess is that if there is a treatment that has been proven to work - or even looks promising - then it is probably available here in the U.S. If it is something that has not yet been shown to have any merit, then, no - it may not be available here, but that reasoning makes sense to me.

I'm also curious (and this is not meant sarcastically or anything) - but I see that you are going to WI for treatment, and am wondering why then have you decided to go there rather than outside of the U.S. for treatment if you feel that this country does not provide the best care?

Again, I wish you and your daughter all the best - you are surely entitled to your opinion and feelings - and I just wanted to express mine as well.

I don’t think SLS is slamming the US here. She is pointing out the difference between the philosophies of Scoliosis treatment. It is the difference between SRS and SOSORT. We may find someday that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Since this thread is, as Dingo pointed out, already a train wreck, I might as well share something that occurred to me last night.

I knew Dingo reminded me of someone. An unrelated post by a member here within the last day triggered my memory. Anyone care to venture a guess?
A hint, a true life person made famous by a movie.

And Dingo, I mean this in a 100% complimentary way.

Thank you Dad, I AM NOT slamming the US here. The facts are the facts. See here for some figures. I am also speaking about our health care system in general, not only about Scoliosis care.

It's simple, I have health insurance, and the therapy IS available to me in this country (if not, and if I had the resources, I would be traveling overseas), and it is only ten hours from where I live.

NOTHING is proven. Not PT, surgery, NOTHING. There have not been any promises made to me, and I am sure if I did chose to go the surgery route at this point, there would be no guarantees there either. This is a choice I am taking, with the support of our orthopedic surgeon.
