  • I have to worst possible case of scoliosis ever

my scoliosis is bad. my spine is actually rotating and can affect my heart and stomach and can lead to cardiac arrest. im so stressed

    Who told you this?

Are you sure you understood it correctly?

The potential problems you mention are ONLY if you don't seek treatment for the curve/rotation and it gets worse, yes?

If you are getting treatment, why are you stressed?

Won't treatment avoid those medical problems you are worried about?

          dancer,

What *exactly* was said? I can hardly imagine a reputable doctor telling someone they "have the worst case of scoliosis ever". That's a pretty extreme, not to mention subjective, statement.

Anyone with a progressing curve COULD potentially experience organ impingement, but it isn't guaranteed, or even all that common. While there's some debate about the exact point where organs are affected, it's generally seen in curves over ±80 (sometimes sooner, sometimes later).

I see you're under 18, but how old are you? Have you talked to your parents about this?

It isn't accurate to generalize like you're doing, nor is it healthy. Instead of letting yourself get bogged down in an "end of the world" mentality, educate yourself. If they're bracing you still (vs. no surgical intervention), it can't be all THAT bad.

Find out the specifics of your curve: Where is it located and what degree is your rotation and Cobb measurement?

Who is your ortho, and does he specialize in scoliosis?

Take a deep breath and calm down, hon. I'm quite certain it isn't as gloomy as you believe.

          Regards,
          Pam

            dancer,

I see you posted last month where you're 13, and say you have a 34.3° curve.

Who measured that? Curves aren't recorded in tenths of degrees ... they can't possibly be measured that precisely. It's commonly accepted that curves can vary as much as five WHOLE degrees in different x-rays - or even the SAME x-ray measured by different doctors.

A 34-35° curve isn't tremendously large. Also, almost all of us has some degree of rotation, so don't blow that out of proportion ... it isn't uncommon at ALL.

I know it's scary, but you're only seeing the worst, Really, and I mean this in a good way, you're solidly *average*.

            Hang in there.

I agree. I wonder if there are any reputable surgeons who report degrees to the tenths. They know it is meaningless.

I am worried you are getting paranormal treatments from a chiro. That's something you should be worrying about, not a mid-thirties curve.

I have to conclude that they don't understand the concept of measurement precision.

What, if any, are the requirements for chiro school anyway? Do you need a high school diploma?

Actually, you need an undergrad. It's a doctorate level degree. No one said common sense/medical understanding is required, however.

I have a good friend who's a chiro - and he laughs his A** off at some of the claims his colleagues make ... and one in particular in Sugarland, TX (just west of Houston) who claims he can cure scoliosis. I'm sure there are people on here who have seen him/bought into his charlantry.

They're not ALL quacks, but even he agrees a LOT of them are.

                        Deep breaths

Okay you have a 29* curve with some rotation, yes?

                        You are being treated, yes?

If the brace doesn't work, you still have options.

I don't see any cause for alarm. I think you will be fine. If you stay on top of things, the problems you mentioned at the beginning of this thread will simply not happen to you. It's the 21st century and we can bask in it.

                        Good luck.
