  • Left or Right handed

I recently heard something about someone with Scoliosis and if they are left or right handed regarding their curves.

If you are right handed then you should try to use you left hand more to strength the muscles around the shoulder. And it could help the muscles and curve.

Well curious if anyone has heard such a thing.

I am right handed and my curve went to the right. My sister is left handed and her curve went to the left. Coincidence?

I write with the left hand but can do just about everything else with both: paint, throw a ball etc.
I had a minor upper 30 deg cervical curve to the left, a major thoracic 80 deg to the right and a minor 40 lumbar compensatory to the left.

Go figure. I personally believe it's genetics-not anything we do with our arms.
      Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.

        Karen and Nancy,

Thank you for your responses. Kinda interesting because I know it couldn't stop the scoliosis growth but it may of been able to make a difference if we were aware of our body. Like muscles and breathing.

I know there are many different types of exercises out there and just as much controversy over them and their effectiveness. But getting in shape and understanding your body is always a good thing.

        Any others with thoughts??

My dd has a left thoracic curve (little compensatory curve) and is right-handed.

Sorry if I threw off your theory.

Of course, my children never were considered "normal."

My curve is to the left but I am right handed. But when my generation were children, we were taught to use our right hand if we showed tendencies to use our left.

My daughter started off left handed (until she broke her left collar bone) and now she is right handed. I write with both hands and both of our curves are to the right.

                I love hearing your responses!!

Thank you everyone because then that let's me know that everything doesn't fit into a mold. Sometimes similarities but nothing exact.

Kind of good because then I think that my parents and I did our best with what we knew at the time and thankful for my blessings and wouldn't change a thing about my scoliosis.

I know I have those days, could of, should of......

                But can't think that way.

                  handedness and curve side

                  hope this helps

a paper that I read recently said the following.

                  "(77.5%) showed the standard
combination of right handedness and right thoracic
scoliosis, left-handed girls (10.25% of the total) had a
random 50–50% distribution of curve lateralization,
and a small group (12.25%) were right handed with left
                  thoracic patterns."

it is currently believed that organs in the chest is responsible for which side the curve bends to.

                    fixscoliosis,

Wow I found your blog very interesting! But sure answers my question I had. It is interesting that I am almost 33 and really never thought to go in depth of why I had Scoliosis or how it became??

The Dr's always said it was because when my mother delivered me she didn't have a normal delivery but there was undue stress on me. She hemorrhaged real bad and was hospitalized for a week. I never found anyone else that had Scoliosis til about 8 months ago and it struck me like WOW and then my recent issues of my own back getting worse and I wanted answers!!

I have learned so much. Different views and much more.....
