  • gymnastics-good or bad??

im a tumbler and a cheerleader and i really don't know what to believe about whether it makes your back worse or not.

    Here's my theory:
Gymnastics/Tumbling might make your back a little worse, but it makes it more flexible, so it doesn't do too much harm.

    What do you guys think?

My daughter does gymnastics (non competive) But she is not allowed to do trampoline. There is a study out of Bulgeria the indicates a conection between repeditive gymnasticsa and scoliosis. The key word here I think is repeditive.

        Hi Allegra :

Please send an email to :gez@ophub.com for a "new great brace " similar to the Rigo- Chaneau brace in combination with the Schroth treatment for scoliosis being very succesful in Europe . He is in Reseda , CA ( 818 )996-1611

            HI

My daughter has 39'and 40' curves.. I researched all the braces and went with the Cheneau brace... We had her made in Fairfax, VA. I can give you contact information if you like. It seems to show a lot of promise..

I don't know much about bracing but as far as cheerleading and tumbling... I think it helped me if anything. I did not tumble (never learned how) but was a back spot and base and flyer for cheerleading Jr. High through College. I recently stopped and my back/muscles have gotten worse. Cheerleading kept me in great shape and kept my back strong- now that I'm not getting that kind of exercise anymore my back has gotten worse. As long as your doctor doesn't say you can't do it I wouldn't stop any sort of physical activity you are doing.

                    Allegra:

For flying the most important thing is to be as tight as possible. If you suck in all your muscles and sort of pull them up with your own strength it makes your bases job much easier.

Being a base as well it is much easier to base a heavy flyer that holds her own weight than a skinny one who flops around.

Practice balancing on one foot or both feet and making your muscles as tight as possible.

Also you can "google" exercises for cheerleaders and it may come up with a list of stretches/exercises you can do to help.

                    Good luck!

                      tracy,
thank you so much for your advice.
unfortunately, im a skinny floppy flyer haha, but i tried partner stunting and i think im getting it.
i think people with scoliosis are naturally unbalanced so i really hope ill get it.
                      thanks for the luck!

                        for what it's worth...
"A 10-fold higher incidence of scoliosis was found in rhythmic gymnastic trainees (12%) than in their normal coevals (1.1%). Delay in menarche and generalized joint laxity are common in rhythmic gymnastic trainees". The study observed "a significant physical loading with the persistently repeated asymmetric stress on the growing spine" in these young gymnasts. A"dangerous triad" is attributed for the etiology of this type of idiopathic scoliosis: "generalized joint laxity, delayed maturity, and asymmetric spinal loading."

There are others as well... .

Bony deformation continues throughout life even after we're done growing in adolescents. We often have some ability to determine which direction it will go by the choices we make in activities and management... for the worse or for the better.

Not trying to persuade you otherwise. Knowledge and information are our greatest assets, we can use them to make informed decisions or choose to ignore them. ...it's up to each individual to decide for themselves.

It's just difficult for me to sit here and watch people do things that may be may be making matters worse, simply because they aren't aware. But by all means, do what makes you happy and enjoy life.

                            all the best,

I have limited my daughter to only recreational gymnastics (no more than one hour a week) and NO TRAMPOLINE or anything like it. It seems to me that the repeditive impact can not be healthy for the spine. In fact I will soon limit floor exercises as well. I asked Dr. Rivard his feelings about this and he was adamant about no trampoline.
