    is there any option?

I am 35 years old and had scoliosis since adolescent. I only had a visit to the doctor recently and told me I have a 70 degree scoliosis and because of my age surgery will not help straighten my back, only 10 degreeswill be coorected w/c is really painful and depressing to hear. Can I still have options to correct my spinal curvature? I hope anyone can help me in a way. Thank you.

I would definetely get another opinion. What kind of doctor are you seeing, is he an ADULT scoliosis specialist? You are only 35, that doesn't seem right to me. I think there is help for you.
28 years old. Fusion for Scoliosis at age 17 from T1 to L1 area with Harrington Rods. Surgery in Sept 2003 for degeneration of discs and bone spurring of the facet joints. (Been dealing with the pain and immobility for almost 4 years.) Found out now that the spurring is back and there is more of it along with disc bulging. Going to NYC on 6-17 to see revision doctor. Probably will be having fusion extended to S1.

    scoliosis

An adult scoliosis surgeon reduced my curve from 80 deg to 40 degrees at the age of 60. This was revision surgery!

With the right surgeon it seems you can be helped.

I am 32 years old and had my 45 degree curve (thoracic) corrected to the point that there is no perceptible curve. Did your surgeon order "bending" x-rays (in which you lean over to one side)? That is one indicator surgeons use to determine how flexible or stiff the curve is. Did the surgeon tell you that your curve was particularly inflexible? At any rate, you should consider getting a second opinion.

    Anna,
Run, do not walk to another doctor!! I'm 55 and had an S curve of 66T/70L. I had REVISION SURGERY BY A DOCTOR WHO SPECIALIZES IN ADULT SCOLIOSIS at the age of 53. I am now have a nearly perfect spine.

    thank you for the info

Yes I did bend from one side to the other in the x-ray and told me that my bone is already matured and even if I undergo surgery 10 degrees will be eliminated, the doctor told me if only I was much younger say 21 then my muscle is still that flexible and also my bone is not matured. Is it true? I live here in Manila, Philippines and I went to a hospital were bones are their specialty, Orthopedic Hospital. Of course maybe in your place doctors and the procedures are advanced compared here in the Philippines so that's why the doctor told me practically I have no chance to straighten my back, but I wonder why you people there had already gone surgery despite your age. Up to now, I don't know, I'm quite depressed and there's no chance for me to go abroad to undergo surgery because of financial means, the fare expenses plus the surgery expenses really make me accept the fact that I have no chance to cure my scoliosis. But anyway thank you for your infos. I just wish that advanced method of surgery in adult scoliosis will be introduced here in the Philippines.

    question for Jenny C

    Hi Jenny,

I'm 28 and have an upper curve of 46 degrees. Can I ask you some questions about your surgery? Since your case seems to be most similar to mine out of what I've read on this forum... How old were you when you had the surgery, and are you (in general) glad you had it done? Also, where did you have it done, you had such a great correction! And how long was your recovery time? I am considering the surgery and am keen to get as much information as possible from adults who have been through it...

    Thanks SO much--Laura

    Sandy C,

Can you give me more info about your surgery at 53 yoa? Who is your doctor or adult sco specialist? If you would like to email me at rosesharon4065@hotmail.com, I would really appreciate it. I am 56 years old and now just getting into seeking treatment for the first time in my life. I did seek treatment way back then, but in the Philippines they didn't have much to offer as far as treatment is concerned, like Anna said.

to One of Five - Am I in Pain?

No, I'm not in pain except when I do household chores but I can still manage it. What bothers me is what the doctor told me that eventually when I grow old, my scolio will start to worsen because when you get old, the bones weaken, and that's what I'm afraid of when I get old. I hope ASCO treatment will be introduced here in the Philippines coz I know many will be benefited if they are for real.

One of Five - Am I in pain?

Nto actually, except when I do household chores, but I still can mange. What bothers me was what the doctor told me that, as of now, in my age, hopefully my curve would not get worse, but as I grow old, it can possibly start again to worsen because as I age, my bones will become weak. I just hope adult scoliosis doctors will be introduced here in the Philippines or the ASCO treatment will finally be introduced here in our country. If anyone had a way to reach out my message to ASCO therapist, please do. I know many will benefit in their therapy if they can really treat scolio.
