  • Chiropractor comment.. advise please?

I need some reassurance here. My chiropractor has told me that there is not pain associated with scoliosis so she doesn't think that scoliosis is what is causing my back pain. Has anyone else heard this? I am in incredible pain and have been for most of my life. I was crushed to have her dismiss my pain as being caused by scoliosis. Is this a normal response from some professionals out there? Thanks everyone.

THAT IS A BUNCH OF B.S.! Your chiropractor should not have told you that, because that is a lie. There IS pain associated with scoliosis. I have three curves in my back, the worst being at 90 degrees and I'm in college. Every day, because of not doing the necessary yoga stretches I have to do, I am in pain just from walking for five minutes. I'm in worse shape now than I was before. When I was first diagnosed with scoliosis, I did not have as much pain as I do now. Now I cannot even stand for very long without having to sit down.

      Hmmmm....

Never thought much of chiro's to begin with, but If I were you I think I'd at least try to find a new one.

Yes, I've already determined that I won't be going back to that chiropractor. I'm so disappointed that she would say such a thing!

I was once told this by a consultant! I can tell you that it is not true. If she suffered from scoliosis and the pain that we have endured they wouldn't be so quick to say that stuff!
          Anterior surgery 18th Jan 07
Fused from T8 to T12 with 2 ribs removed
Surgery was done by Mr Harrison and his team at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, England
Revision posterior surgery on 26th April 07 to remove protruding rib stumps
No longer wearing a Stanmore custom hard backed brace
Posterior surgery on 18th August 08 due to non fusion of first op and further kyphosis. Two rods from T2 to T12

I had a chiropractor tell me my spine was straight when I had a 50 degree curve!! Avoid chiros, this is a bone problem not a muscle problem. With the imbalance that scoliosis causes, you will have pain from pressure on the discs, and nerves being pinched.

Just an update here from my original comment about my chiro telling me that scoliosis does not cause pain. Since then I've also been told the same thing by several nurses, by my brother in law who also has scoliosis, by my physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor, by a doctor of occupational medicine, and by someone who was doing my mri. Basically everyone I have seen! They all don't deny that I have pain but say it's not caused by scoliosis, just weak back muscles and some arthritis and a couple bulging discs. They all suggest just physical therapy to strengthen my back. I do not want to go through physical therapy again. I've started an at home stretching program and I'm also using "the bean" to help stretch out my back (which does actually "hurt so good"...love that feeling of a good stretch even though it hurts). What would you all do? My doctor is reluctant to send me to an orthopedic doctor because neither she nor I want me to have surgery. I'm forty years old and just diagnosed with this and I am afraid of surgery. My back hurts like crazy every day for most of my life and it's hard to deal with. So far pain meds do not help at all. I'm at a loss, especially when people tell me my pain is not caused from my scoliosis.
Any advice for me? Thank you so much.

                Pain management

Although I don't have scoli, I do have a herniated disk that causes me continuous sciatic pain all day everyday. I remember starting to have pain about 1995, so I've lived with it for a long time. So I totally understand what you are trying to deal with.

As for those that have told you that scoli does not cause pain, you should ask them if a wonky spine might pinch a nerve, or cause a bulging disk, or compress the spinal cord, or push internal organs out of place, or infringe the lung field, or apply unusual pressure to the rib cage, or make one leg shorter than the other, or cause rib humps, etc. If the answer to any of these is yes, then you should ask them if these things might also be painful. Then you should have them log in to this forum and read about the many many many people who are in pain everyday because of their scoli. It is amazing to me that any medical professional would deny a relationship between scoli and pain.

As for what you should do about your pain, I would recommend seeking out a pain management clinic. We have a very good one associated with our university hospital and several smaller pain clinics in the metropolitan area. I'm sure there are some in your area as well. They may be able to help you find the best way to manage your pain.

                Good luck.

                  Spencer's Dad is so right!!!!!!!

I am 49 and wore a brace from my very early childhood years (2-3) until I had stopped growing at about (17). I wore the milwaukee brace all of these years. I constantly complained that my back hurt and my ortho doctor would always say that I had no pain...I was feeling sorry for myself. My mom believed that and she ignored my distress calls. Well, I had a child at 21 and my pain was so intense I had to stay in bed for much of my days during my pregnancy. After my child was born, the pain got much worse. I went to another doctor about the pain. He again said it was not my spine causing my pain. I tried for the next ten years to "live with whatever was causing my pain". Finally, I had stoood it as long as I possibly could and went back to a spine specialist last year. My curve had gotten so bad that I had several bulging disks, pinched nerves causing severe nerve damage to my arms and my legs, my lungs are at danger now due to my rotational rib cage. All of the things that are causing me to be terribly miserable in life now are caused by my scoliosis. Perhaps the easy twist in the spine might maybe, not cause pain, but the things that happen because of the disease do. I know what you are going through. Now, i wear a body brace that supports my entire torso and without it, I am in terrible pain. I cannot afford surgery or anything like physical therapy now so I live with the disease the best way I can. Sorry you have been subjected to so much negativity. It isn't fair. no one knows the pain that you have. They cannot feel what you are feeling. But look at yur friends here on this forum.....because they know. Let those non-believers read these posts. Then, tell them that if you hit their foot with a hammer, they can't convince you that it hurts either!

My little 10 year old daughter had pain every day from her scoliosis until she got her brace. Her brace aleviates her pain. I was also told that her scoliosis did not cause pain. Bull Hockey!
God has used scoliosis to strengthen and mold us. He's good all the time!On this forum these larger curves have not held forever in Spinecor, with an initial positive response followed by deterioration. With deterioration, change treatment. The first year she gained 4 or 5 inches and was stable at around 20/20 in brace, followed by rapid progression the next year. She is now 51/40 (Jan2008)out of brace (40/30 in Spinecor) and started at 38/27 out of brace(Jan2006.) Now in Cheneau.
