  • Getting on a Motorcycle

I am fused from C2 to SI . I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to get onto a motorcycle as a passenger. Any exercises to get more flexible?

    Thanks

    Post of the year!

I would send this post to SRS. I don't think any of them there would believe it. Of course they don't know your story.

Melissa, You are incredible. I guess we don't have to ask how you are doing.....Wow!

What kind of bike? Is it a large Harley?

Remember the poster up in Idaho many years ago? She was a biker with a full fusion. If you want, I will go through all the old stuff and find her for you.

Hi Ed, good to hear from you. I have been with a great guy for several years. Yes, he owns a Harley. He rides with his friends but would like me to go with him.
      Any suggestions, I welcome
I would love to be in contact with the poster in Idaho
      Thanks

Sounds good with the new guy....and good to hear you are doing ok now. That was a really long surgical road you took. What a battle! Did you also get your knee done?

The type of motorcycle means a lot. There is a big difference between a Road King and a Sportster. Climbing on lighter bikes relying on flimsy kickstands is looking for trouble as it will fall down. The bike also needs to be in the right position and not pointed down slope as it can roll forward off the stand.

Does the bike have a back rest or a sissy bar? If so, you won't able to simply hop on the back and swing your right leg over.
He would have to hold the bike while on the kick stand when you get on. Facing the bike standing on the left side, place left foot on the left driver foot peg, then lift your right leg over the seat and place it on the right drivers peg. Then you will have to shift to the back seat and then place your feet on the passenger pegs. You will have some trouble looking down. Hold onto the handle bars when you get on. The kick stands on the big Harley's (Electraglide, Roadking etc)are pretty strong. He would then have to get on the bike after you are on. You would have to practice your method. He will also have to make sure you don't fall.

If he gets on the bike first, he will not be able to catch you should you fall. He should be able to dismount with you sitting on the back.

Always mount and dismount from the left side ONLY. Thats the side the kickstand is on.

You do realize that a crash could be devastating.... (smug face) Your surgeon will get mad at you.

Start out with a short 15 minute trip and see how you feel after that ride Don't go for a long trip so you can see how your soft tissues react. I rode supermoto before my fusion and did a 6 hour 100 mile trip to the lost coast of California and my back was just roasted. I was riding really hard with high G forces through the twistie's. Staying in the sitting position is hard to do. When I rode years ago, I would ride standing up on the pegs quite often. Dirtbike style.

With flexibility, as far as the amounts of scar tissue you have from all the multiple procedures, I wouldn't use any weights or force anything. It's like the chair hanging that I did in my recovery to reach my shoes, the hanging was done without any pulling down. One foot up, leaning forward hanging arms down to reach the laces. It took several months of repetition to get there.

Keep the forces down. If you break another rod, you will find out that your fusion integrity wasn't the best. It's a hard way to find out. With a history of pseudarthrosis and possible infection in osteoporotic bone, try to take it easy....

        You have paid your dues.

        Glad you chimed in.

Good to hear from you Melissa. It sounds like things are going well.
I am fused almost like you. I think you have to determine which leg has more mobility. Mine are not the same. For me, I determined, to get out of a high bathtub, I step out right leg and then turn backwards and bring out my left leg.It just doesn't work any other way.
          Good luck.

Thank you for your help. You have given me lots to think about. I will contact her and see what she says. I had osteomyelitis surgery and the hardware was taken out of my right femur in February 2020. The osteomyelitis returned this year but I have been lucky to control it with antibiotics. Both IV and now oral.

Yes, I can tie them....On a chair, or even on the floor..... it's the long reach. But I have not tied my sneakers in a long time.....It's been months.

I use a long shoe horn. Its 24" long. Amazon has plenty of long shoe horns up to 31" They also have telescoping shoe horns for travel.

I invert it to hold the tongue up while inserting the foot, then flip it over, insert behind the heel and press down. You have to get your shoes tied by someone, double over the knot so they won't come loose. It might take a few tries.

If the tongue follows the foot in, you have to start the process over.

I don't have any open back shoes right now. I had a pair of open back Keens for my surgeries. I guess they call that a clog. Something like this shoe. I am not seeing the actual shoes that I had. They were great actually, I should buy another pair.

I found a few sock install photos I did a few years back. See below.
First photo....foot up on chair, toes up.
2nd photo... Install sock on toes.
                  3rd photo....Pull sock up.
4th photo...10 year scar photo. I am too heavy now for the front photo. My stuff is sacred you know...Ha ha

The anterior scar is 17" long. There is a traffic circle that runs around my belly button. Interesting how my vascular surgeon did that. He was the one who dug the hole before the scoli surgeons came in.
