  • Vitamin D

I have known about vitamin D for a really long time and just recently started taking it. (Go figure) It's plastered all over the web, just google "Vitamin D scoliosis" and you will see that scoliosis patients are deficient on this one. Below is a writeup from the Hey clinic...

    https://heyclinic.com/archives/476

Since I don't have too many unfused levels left, I figured I would start on 2000 IU of Vitamin D3 gummies to try to help out with the disc herniations in my neck.

And I must say, after a few days so far so good. I can turn my head now without all the popping.

There are countless articles and studies online on this subject matter. I have read that 75% of the planet is deficient on Vitamin D.

I have been taking Vitamin D (D3) since around age 40. Being female, my orthoped suggested it early on and I come from a family history of osteoporosis . For years I took 4000 IU in addition to what was already in the Calcium tablets and any other vitamin that I take. A couple years ago I asked my spine surgeon about it - he said he takes 5000 IU per day. Where we live we don't get nearly enough natural Vitamin D. I upped mine to 5000 IU.

When I get my blood work done, my Vitamin D levels are in the "normal" range - but without supplements I'd be very low.

Kathy, I never targeted specific vitamins.... I would take the occasional multi-vitamin but never noticed anything other than maybe an increase in appetite. You eat like a horse, you have to be getting your vitamin's right? I guess not. It seems there are very specific ways of getting vitamin D.

I have had some periodontal problems with a 2nd molar and saw the vitamin B recommendation on a periodontal site. I have been going heavy on the dental with brushings and water flossings with listerine 3-4X per day. My teeth are super clean these days, but before the Vitamin D, I was still struggling with gum rawness and on the edge of infection. Perio disease down deep on the teeth is beyond the reach of flossing. It's not easy to deal with. I have been through a lot of periodontal sites. I also have taken Amoxicillan a few times over the last 2 years fighting this tooth battle which I don't like doing.

Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin. COVID has kept me inside mostly out of the sun, so no vitamin D there.

I drink Soy or Almond milk (I'm lactose intolerant) usually with my favorite granola which is sold at Whole Foods. Since the lockdown, I have not driven over to Whole Foods in months and thus not drinking any Almond milk (which is fortified with Vitamin D).

My mouth and my neck has cleared up, (in 1 week) and I can turn my head again. (I have taken no diclofenac since I was in South America).

I can't believe it, this is a miracle!

      Thanks for posting.

Now I have to wonder how my pain would have been if I had taken vitamin D before my surgeries.

        Vitamin D and Periodontal Pathology

Here is the study I forgot to post.

        https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/art...ll%20apoptosis.

A while back, my periodontist pointed out that I had lost some jaw bone (by x-ray) behind a 2nd molar leading into the wisdom tooth area. He wanted to pull the 2nd molar, which he did, and put an implant in. After that very painful pull, I battled bone spurs for a year which are also extremely painful. We never did proceed with the implant due to the pain.

They mention how Vitamin D helps with the remodeling of bone....and you can't help but wonder what's going on with the spine. If I lost the jaw bone, could this have played a critical role with my scoliosis?

I guess you can't blame Fred Flintstone for this....(smiley face)

My mouth is completely cleared up, and that happened fast. My neck is doing fantastic also. No popping or cracking and full mobility.

My surgeon prescribed vitamin D for me post-surgery. I thought this would be universally prescribed for fusion patients, I'm surprised to hear that it isn't. It was considered important for the fusion succeed.

I take 2000 mg of D daily plus whatever smaller amount is in the multivitamin I take. If more isn't harmful, I will go up to higher levels. The gummies are tasty, too.

Tina, At the time of my surgeries, I am guessing my vitamin D levels were ok. I was not told to take vitamin D. (my surgeon is also a chemist)

                3 days.

I have FULL mobility of my neck now, no popping and no cracking. I'm talking Linda Blair. (without the pea soup)

This all happened after I hit a fence with my RV in the beginning of July. I have to back down a hill while making a sharp turn between the house and a wooden fence with 6 inches on each side. I couldn't turn my head at all at that time, and using mirrors is not easy when you are going blind. Needless to say, the fence went "kerchunk" like a 100 ton stamping press that sent me into laughter....Anyway, I did manage not to forget the Vitamin D when I went out food shopping.

I also have hit the house twice....It was like the Titanic hitting the iceberg with the 100 foot gash. LOL It was about $500 worth of repair work for "nicking" the house.

I laugh at this kind of stuff.....It's all insignificant when you have serious medical problems and pain.

Vitamin D is probably one of the easiest modalities I have come across for dealing with scoliosis related pain.

Once again, it's best to ask your doctor. This thread is a testimonial, open for discussion.

There are always 2 sides to every coin.

I have taken vitamins and usually there isn't any noticeable change or immediate result. My experience with vitamin D produced an immediate result, that why I posted.

What I should do is stop the Vitamin D and see if things return to the way they were. Having a tooth infection problem is a great way of finding out because you notice it right away.

It's nice to have positive results no matter what you do....tangible results in a timely fashion.
