  • MAGEC rods vs fusion for children

When is one used over the other for a 5 year old child for treatment of congenital scoliosis with a hemivertibrae at T11?

Only a pediatric orthopedic surgeon knows the answer to that question. There is ZERO chance anyone here knows. Maybe even less than zero.

When MAGEC rods were introduced several years ago, they seemed wonderful. Being able to expand the rods without a surgery.

Since then there have been several papers identifying problems. Here is a paper written for lay people on the general topic...

    https://ryortho.com/breaking/new-dat...c-rod-failure/

If you look at the meeting abstracts, there are more and more papers identifying issues.

I think they are still implanting them though.

Question: What do you call alternative medicine that works?

Also found this in re MAGEC plus congenital

It can be used for the more rigid congenital varieties, the results of distraction may not be favorable, but the fact that the rod can act as an internal brace in itself can be of help in maintaining curvature.

That's hilarious! Even though many use a less than zero probability, its impossible.

The one thing we do know is that the probability of repeat growing rod surgeries is 100% You cant grow from 3 feet to 6 feet without doing something.....

I have not seen any time values, or number of adjustments with Magec to failure.(let me know if you see this) If one standard growing rod surgery is avoided with Magec, is it worth it? You also have to worry about infection since that can trigger another surgery.

They have done over 3000 kids with Magec. A few years have passed since Anthony was done. (I am sure you remember him)

This will show what happens with the Magec system. Its an extremely difficult engineering problem.

Only a surgeon can answer? What's the point of this forum then?

I may as well just google my questions.

Patient to patient sharing of experiences and support.

We don't typically have any medical professionals participating, so a Google search will generally give you as much information as any of us can provide when you're looking for treatments, especially when you're dealing with something that has to do with rarer forms of scoliosis.

To learn about scoliosis related matters the others wont tell you....from hands on experience. Knowing what to expect, knowing what to ask, knowing what to do. When I was diagnosed, there was nothing. No support whatsoever. The doctors just shook their heads in 1975.

Many surgeons are also super busy, and can only answer so many questions. They also keep most answers short since we are not medically trained. They don't know if we understand the terminology and they also worry about the emotional aspects we go through when we find out about scoliosis specific matters that include complications. Lets face it, its not an easy thing to do. There are also answers that are next to impossible to answer even for scoliosis surgeons, and having a scoliosis related problem is usually specific to each patients case. There is no way you can get professional scoliosis specific answers from Google, or even here for that matter. The thing is being prepared when you do go and have a visit with your surgeon or undergo a serious scoliosis procedure. We have heard here "Nobody told me about this" quite a few times. Hopefully, there is a heads up before so that everyone understands. Scoliosis is a lifelong disease. Its our disease and it takes a long time to figure all of it out.

The forum is highly valuable since many members weigh in while we sit around the table. Almost like a jury which is part of our legal system, members of the jury deliberate on a subject matter, many thoughts that are blind to one person will be brought up by another. We all learn from each other. I have followed case examples here for many years and so have many other members. Its a huge collective knowledge, and its interactive. Google has bots. Medical chatbots probably from servers in India. "I think I have coronavirus, what should I do?" "Go to a doctor". (smiley face)

You have not mentioned what your surgeon has recommended on your sons procedure, usually the hemi procedures in kids are short fusions, just a few levels. Has your surgeon mentioned Magec, or growing rods? If interested in Magec, here is a physician locator for Magec surgeons.
              https://www.nuvasive.com/surgeon-locator/

If you know that your son will need approx 12-18 growth rod procedures till he matures, if Magec eliminates half of them even though it has a high failure rate, it would seem to make sense. Its not going to be a guarantee against fusion, either is tethering, but you would have to hear this from a qualified ped scoliosis surgeon. Not from us.

Its also really hard when someone comes on looking for a surgeon. Since things can happen, usually I will pitch a few names because that leaves the selection process up to the individual. If something should go wrong, it eliminates the guilt.

Having spine pain is the worst thing....The forum also offers support which only a scoliosis patient can tell you about. We understand one another....

I hope the 3D printing info I posted helped you out. I think that I would want my sons hemi printed. Its just the way I feel about it. If you live in New York or California, your golden since there are a good choice of specialists. If you have to leave your state it presents insurance problems. Buy the best insurance you can now for your son, its important. You can also do Shriners....

My surgeon recommended coming here in our talks many years ago. If you have scoliosis, it helps to be proactive and write and ask questions and learn. There is nothing temporary or even permanent about scoliosis. It is truly a lifelong dilemma with its ups and downs....I hope you understand.

                      Thanks Jackie!

Again, The recall is for the "Model X" system first manufactured in July 27, 2017...... Prior versions are "not" affected.

End cap seperation occuring in .5% on the Model X system. 1 out of 200. They do not state how many Model X systems were installed.

On a different subject, this whole coronavirus thing is such a major change....

I hope patients that were scheduled for surgery that might have been canceled are hanging in there....

I will be grocery shopping at 6AM when its safe. Skipping out on the "highly contagious, young and healthy" members of society....From now on when I meet up with younger people, I will address them as "Hi there, highly contagious, young and healthy!" (smiley face) You stay 6 feet away, you hear!

I wish I was highly contagious, young and healthy!

Yes we all have to do our part. Understanding that everyone is under more stress. I am in Illinois and an order to remain at home.
One of My sons,an engineer, has been so involved with making sure I am always at home. I think his office gets regular updates . He seems to know the news before it hits the media. I know on Friday, the engineers were sent to inspect water treatment plants making sure they all had working equipment and proper chemicals.
