Sharon, mother of identical twin girls with scoliosis

      No island of sanity.

Question: What do you call alternative medicine that works?
      Answer: Medicine

Thanks Sharon, I guess I have my security settings set up way too tight.

There are a lot of adult members here with head shaking scoliosis x-rays. I guess that's an advantage of severe scoliosis, (if that makes any sense) It is amazing that a lot of us adults come out as good as we do. You really do have to ask why this happens? Why do some full fusion patients ski and play golf when single level fusion patients become disabled? I know, there is never an easy answer.

I do have a non-scoli friend that had a 3 level laminectomy done for sciatica 3 years ago, and it didn't work due to some sort of complication. He just informed me that they are fusing 4 lumbar levels in November....posterior procedure, no cages, and well, I have to admit, I am worried....he has a history of heart problems. His gate is like a bulldozer on rocks, (rough) and he has a wooden leg. After age 60 with spine troubles, you get tired.

Purdue filed for bankruptcy yesterday as a result of the Opioid crisis and 2600 lawsuits....They make Oxy. Its funny how they mentioned that it lasts 11 hours, and when I took it, it seemed like it only worked for 3, resulting in taking so much more, I ended up doing a switch since it really didn't cut the mustard for my scoliosis recovery. Percoset was just a tad better...probably due to the Tylenol.

It seems that there is a serious lack of respect for medications. If Elvis were alive, he would tell you about it.

I mention this because many people with spine pain end up on the opioid route, and after a long history of "oxy torture", they submit to surgery after they destroyed their kidneys and livers. I am no doctor, but if I take a med, I want a result. If the pain returns, there is a problem. I did this with NSAID's for 6 years leading up to my surgeries.

I am a proponent for surgery for severe adult scoliosis patients like me who had their lives saved. There is a cutoff point that needs to be defined, depending on each patient. I almost had the door slam shut and was lucky to be proactive and have my surgeries done. Age 50, with 50 degree Cobb's, means you shouldn't ignore your scoliosis....Actually, big curves at age 40 is more like it. Trying to figure out the pain/degenerative rate is the trick. How fast am I degenerating? Pain is a good indicator, masking with medications in my case and in many cases is temporary.....

          Sharks, Surgery, Fear and Anxiety

Since Dr Hanscom mentions anxiety at the bottom of his post, I figured I would post this video. Controlling anxiety is important.

This couple are excellent filmmakers travelling the world on a sailboat. In Tahiti, this video is about night diving with hundreds of sharks, (In a feeding frenzy) and Nikki, she talks about understanding her fears. Listen to the quotes at the close of the video.

Is it bravery or understanding and knowledge? Our fears of surgery are pretty much the same thing. Who dives with sharks? Only the crazy brave....but only until you understand. I went through all these emotions as a diver, ski jumper, and as a surgical patient. Divers are now diving with Great White sharks now, without a cage. This only comes through understanding and knowledge. Scoliosis surgery is similar.

This post is for all the revision patients here. There will always be that fear, that never goes away, its just easier after you know what to expect.

Some divers do thousands of dives and continue and seek extreme diving. In the past, I would never miss a night dive and I know it sounds crazy, but it isn't.

I guess we do what we need to do, and we do what we have to do.
