  • Advanced MRI findings Neuroanatomical changes in CNS

In the Cotrel White book of scoliosis research, Professor Winne Chu in Hong Kong is an imaging expert, and has found a few things through advanced MRI studies.

From Pages 47 through 52, (scroll down) she has noticed vestibular "anatomical variations" in the inner ear...... Left side only, right thoracic curves. I guess this explains a few things on the right thoracic idiopathic question.

Also proven that we have CNS problems....which I have always suspected.

Our curves are symptoms of our disease and we have numerous hidden features that have yet to be explored.

Because Scott has a syrinx and his curve was spotted at age 4 I believe it's likely that his Scoliosis was the result of a congenital birth defect.

However for most of the patient population that's almost certainly not the case. It's some type of nervous system disorder that hits almost 3% of kids around the world. The vertebral wedging/spinal curve/muscle assymetry and everything else is the symptom of the disorder.

Motor cortical hyperexcitability in idiopathic scoliosis: could focal dystonia be a subclinical etiological factor?
children with IS revealed an abnormally reduced cortico-cortical inhibition at the short ISIs. Cortico-cortical inhibition was practically normal on the side of the scoliotic convexity while it was significantly reduced on the side of the scoliotic concavity. In conclusion, these findings support the hypothesis that a dystonic dysfunction underlies in IS. Asymmetrical cortical hyperexcitability may play an important role in the pathogenesis of IS and represents an objective neurophysiological finding that could be used clinically.
Asymmetric expression of H19 and ADIPOQ in concave/convex paravertebral muscles is associated with severe adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
RESULTS: We demonstrated that ADIPOQ mRNA and H19 is significantly differentially expressed between two sides of paravertebral muscle, relatively specific in the context of AIS. Relatively low H19 and high ADIPOQ mRNA expression levels in concave-sided muscle are associated with larger spinal curve and earlier age at initiation.

      I agree...

Back on the inner ear, (our gyroscope) when you think about dizziness and vertigo, you automatically think about the ears.

I had a series of severe vertigo attacks in 1992 and was diagnosed with viral labyrinthitis. (I was 34) This is not dizziness, I was gripping the shag carpet (those were shag carpet days) with my hands to keep the room from flipping over, and, well, I'm as deaf as a fence post now....which is not too bad as it lowers the incoming bs factor coming from others. He he (have to have a joke) And I wonder about the dizzies that I have had over the years now with the new inner ear discovery....They did state that curve magnitude was relative to the abnormality and size of the inner ear tubes. 12 year old girls, left inner ear, right thoracic curve. I wonder about the right ear, do I have inner ear malformations on both sides with a 70/70 S curve? It would be nice if they answered this question.

When I get dizzy now, this has been happening lately, its best to just sit still or try to lay down.

Those white book studies have to be read through a bunch of times. There are brain, brain stem, and spinal cord size and position abnormalities also.

The assymetric expression study is interesting since the weak muscles are hard to build. The Hypothalamus is the link to hormones and we do have hormonal disorders. They don't mention the hypothalamus on the MRI studies unless I have missed it.

These new clues are extremely helpful.
