  • 7 Year Anniversary Today

I was just browsing through Facebook and noticed the date and suddenly realized that today is my 7 year anniversary! I never believed that I could overlook the date of my scoliosis surgery. Because of this forum, I had the courage to go through with the surgery. When you live in a small town, one usually doesn't know anyone else who has had scoliosis surgery. It helped me so much to get support from others going through the surgery at the same time as I was as well as those who had months or years of recovery. Being an avid golfer, it was hard to wait over a year before playing again, but it was so worth it! My rib hump is gone and my back is straight. I can stand for hours with no back pain, where 2-3 minutes of standing before surgery was painful. I am golfing, tap dancing, bike riding, gardening, etc. Life is good! Best of luck to all of you with upcoming surgeries and with your recoveries!

Dr. Lenke, my surgeon, is no longer in St. Louis so I will be seeing Dr. Gupta in two weeks for new x-rays. I hope I get a good report!

    Woo...Hoo....Karen....

Congratulations on your anniversary! You came out great!

I'm coming up on my 10th Year on the 29th of January.....10 years ago, I was a zombie at this time, like Curly used to say, "Hey Moe, I try to think and nothing happens". What would we do without the humor! LOL

How is your neck doing? Just wondering....

Are we supposed to go back in? Did they notify you about coming in for a checkup?

      Ed,
It's always goods to hear from you. I check in and read posts periodically and always appreciate your humor as well as the good information. Dr. Gupta (he replaced Dr. Lenke in St. Louis) told me I didn't need to come back for 5 years when I went for my 5 year check up two years ago, however, I am in a study with Dr. Bridwell who recommended that those who have had surgery see their surgeon every year or two. Since I am only 30 minutes from St. Louis, I made an appointment. I am not experiencing any pain, but would like to be reassured that everything is still looking good. I also have some questions about some specific exercises, such as, sit-ups, toe touches, jumping jacks, etc. that we do in some of my classes. I don't want to do anything that would jeopardize the vertebrae above my fusion.
I am sorry for your loss of your friend.

Do you remember when you hit a golf ball to show me that it's possible with a fused spine? I think you impressed yourself!

Thx Karen! Of course I do! I was amazed at the increased control and stability while driving those balls.

Its hard to impress ourselves or others after such a monumental undertaking like scoliosis surgery recovery. When an achievement happens, its a good thing.

Congratulations on the milestone. I just passed 9 years in December. It is hard to believe. I have hit a few big walls to scale over though. I'm in cruise mode at the moment.
I will however see my surgeon this coming week. It has been a year since I last talked to him. It will be interesting to see what he says about me being diagnosed with arachnoiditis.
            T10-pelvis fusion 12/08
            C5,6,7 fusion 9/10
            T2--T10 fusion 2/11
            C 4-5 fusion 11/14

Right pectoralis major muscle transfer to scapula
To replace the action of Serratus Anterior muscle 3/16
            Broken neck 9/28/2018
Emergency surgery posterior fusion C4- T3
Repeated 11/2018 because rods pulled apart added T2 fusion

Removal and replacement of C4-T10 hardware with C7 and T 1

              Jackie,
I had to look up arachnoidtis as I am not familiar with it. Please let us know what your surgeon says.

Thanks, Marianne. How are you getting along?

                Karen

I am still waiting for surgery date, the short list here seems to be a long list.
If we could afford to go to the USA I would have it done there.
So am just coping until I get a call.
