Problems with atypical curves.

Hi everyone,

Happy December. I am finally headed to a neurosurgeon this coming week and I hope I can eventually get some answers as to what's causing my leg nerve issues. For the last several months my low back pain got way worse and created newer nerve related symptoms. Burning in low back, butt area with nerve feeling sensations starting in back thigh and down in leg, calf. It seems to be progressing, not getting better even with lots of stretching for sciatic and Schroth stretching for last several months.

Apparently with having a main right side lumbar curve with left thoracic compensatory curve this shows a bigger red flag. I have never had an MRI as a teenager being diagnosed but after reading about this rarer curve, I probably should have. I am also seeking out consultations with a scoliosis specialist and hope to atleast hear if I can even be helped with my type of curve and if there is something more there than just a backwards curve.

I am hoping to rule out things that could be like tumor and other spinal chord issues. Does anyone else here have atypical curves and did you have anything more than just a curve?

I'm thankful for all of your knowledge and am trying wait patiently for answers from the specialist doctors.

With the possible exception of congenital bone issues, I doubt the left thoracic/right lumbar curve makes any difference to a scoliosis specialist. If you want an answer to whether or not there are underlying factors, you'll probably need to see a geneticist.

Thanks Linda. I have never worried about having that atypucal curve until the pain slowly started a few years ago and now with nerve pain daily, I'm a little worried.

Hopefully the Neuro Dr will be able to help me figure out what's causing it before it's too late and I give myself permanent nerve damage. This nerve stuff is seriously getting on my last nerve

Today was discouraging. I stay as strong as I can and go about my life as well as I can. I waited all month to see this neurosurgeon as my symptoms are getting worse with nerve pain and other stuff going on and is worrying me more. The PA comes in to talk to me and gets my copies of my X-rays to give to the Dr. The PA comes back 10 minutes later and says he can't see me as my spine is beyond him wanting to help me. So I leave.... Upset! Another dead end.

The PA said she would contact a different scoliosis dr. to try and see me.

I just want an MRI so that I have something to bring with me when I make my plans to see some of these top Dr's I hear about on here.

Tomorrow will be a better day.

I do know how discouraging it is not to get an answer when you are so looking for one. A good thing is at least he was direct and honest and willing to make a referral.
I think your primary care doctor can give an order for a MRI. Yes it is important to have some of these scans with you when you go. Make sure to request your copy if you have one. This way it is easy to go where you need to.

I really hope to see someone soon to get the MRI done. I have braces on unfortunately but have no problems getting them removed for the test if needed.

I would like a complete spinal chord test to check for everything that can relate with a serious major right sided lumbar/ left thoracic curve.

I've had a lot of strange problems over the last few years that have been escalating and it's got me worried.

I'm headed out of state to see a Scoliosis specialist at the end of February and hope the nerve stuff doesn't keep getting worse and I can wait 11 more weeks.

Kay you may be ok with the braces. When I worked for an orthodontist the braces were stainless steel and that is not magnetic . Just ask if you need your wires removed.
