  • HELP-people who have been there

Hopefully I'll get more answers from people who unfortunately have had to go through this more than once. It is a very simple question: Did you have any trouble sleeping on your back after discharge from the hospital? I am restricted to sleeping on my back from a prior lumbar surgery, so you can see why I am worried about it. I have seen/read some horror stories about it, but know nothing about the sources. You folks have been through the mill, and know. PLEASE people, help me out. RJM

    Hi.....
I ONLY slept on my back after surgery. My incision was not irritated at all by sleeping on my back. I took the advice of the people on this forum and I bought a 3" memory foam topper for my bed. I did my first 6 weeks of recovery in the city I had my surgery (not where I live) so I had just a twin bed with a "normal" mattress. The 3" foam topper did make a "softer" surface for me to sleep on.

When I returned home, I have a Tempurpedic mattress and I sleep on my back just fine on it.

    I hope this helps!

I could not sleep on my back. I could not stand for anything to touch my back.

Like Kathy, I slept only on my back for about a year after surgery. I was surprised at how easily I slept on my back because I'd always been a side or stomach sleeper. I can now sleep however I like and sometimes I still sleep on my back.
