  • Hip pain caused by scoliosis...????

i am wondering if anyone here has experienced this...

i have new pain...around the last 2 months or so that i've noticed
it...the pain started in my left hip...it felt like it was on fire...
then that stopped, and the pain seemed to be in right hip....
bad, deep pain/ache that was more in back of the right hip than
    actually IN the right hip...
before any of the hip pain started, i noticed that just below both hips
felt numb/tingly...the kind of numb similar to when your mouth
is waking up after novocaine from the dentist....
at this point, i feel the numbness/tingliness just below both hips, and just
above that, on both sides, feels kind of bruised/sore.

i think this is all being caused by worsening of lumbar curve...
my lumbar curve was measured at 61 degrees in 2010..
2 years later, it was measured at 70 degrees...
both measurements were done with X rays.
my thoracic curve has remained 41-42 degrees since 2010.

has anyone experienced hip pain that seems to be caused by their
scoliosis...??? it seems to me to be reasonable for uneven pressure
from scoliosis curves to cause some kind of pain type symptoms in
    or around the hips...
my pain is worse now on right side...and that is the side that i have
an exaggerated "waist"...my left side, same area, is completely straight.

    Hi Jess...

It could be your hips. It could be your back. But, it sounds like trochanteric bursitis to me. The feeling of bruising is the tip off.

      thanks, Linda
it is gonna send me to a surgeon this spring...
i will also see what pain doc has to say at appt end of April...
this pain is BAD...and now constant...
takes swallowing NSAID...which i rarely got relief from prior to this...
and oxycontin...to get me moving...and i do not like needing
those meds on an every day basis!
this pain is relatively new.... and extremely unwelcome...

thanks for the advice...i will follow up with doctors...
am wondering if others on forum have similar pain....

Jess I'm so sorry to hear that. It sounds like it came on over only a few months. Maybe that is a clue?

I hope you get some relief.

          thanks, Sharon...
i noticed today that the right hip area actually seems swollen...
the NSAID helps, which makes sense, and is first time such
a medication gave me any relief...
          but it is not enuf...
i will discuss if there is something my pain doc can do for this...
i am curious to see a new X ray, too...
suspect that lumbar curve is increasing...
if nothing else, there is pressure being created on right side.

weather finally getting warmer in northeast...
it would be nice to be able to walk Spark and not
be prevented by this new pain...

          happy spring...finally!

frustrating that doctors do not order X rays without "seeing"
            existing patients...saying insurance companies balk...
i am trying to get Manhattan pain doc to order spinal X rays before
my next appt April 24th...i have to speak to someone at desk in his
office Wednesday...since the doctor sees me every month or two for
spinal pain, it might be possible...pretty sure getting hip X rays before
visit will not be, as doctor has never seen me for hip pain...
it is such rigid thinking...and delays things...
to not have X rays there when one walks into see doctor makes it more difficult...so the doctor has to say..."well, let's see what the X rays show and i'll see you next month"
thus, i expect this to take longer than should be necessary...

pardon me...just grumbling...and annoyed doctors and patients
get stuck adhering to rigid rules of insurance companies...
meanwhile, pain meds plus NSAIDs are helping, but not eliminating, the pain. (tells me inflammation is likely involved)

              Hey Jess,

At every single surgical appointment, they took the radiographs first and then we met the surgeon who brought them into the room to show us. Don't they do that will adult patients???

                hey Sharon
office staff tell me insurance companies want to see a "note" in
the patient's chart, put there by the doctor, to "justify" the Xray
order...i am hoping there are enuf previous "notes" in my chart
at pain doc's office to allow them to mail me orders for spinal
X rays...but there is no note in my chart about hip pain...
so i am sure it cannot be "justified" to insurance company that
                hip X ray is needed....
the top surgeons have X ray machines in their offices, so it is
not a problem with those surgeons...
but i will be seeing pain doc...he does not have X ray equipment...
                just usual fluroscope.

am complaining about a nuisance...creates need for an extra visit
to doctor...you'd think the insurance company would want to save
the money from an extra visit....they are busy thinking doctors are
                ordering "unneeded X rays"
(like we all want to glow in the dark from too many X rays)

pain makes me grumpy is what it is...
                thanks for concern...

                  Jess,
I am so sorry for your hip pain. I will be seeing Dr. Hey tomorrow to determine if my hip pain is from my back or actually is my hip. He canceled on me last week so I hope he doesn't cancel me this week. Which reminds me, I'd better take my hip xrays with me for Dr. Hey to see. Fortunately my hip pain has diminished since a couple of weeks ago so I don't need to take extra pain meds. Good luck in seeing your Doctor soon.

                        thanks so much, Jen...
glad i have access to NSAIDS...i have no prescription for them of my own.
gave up on them helping me years ago...
thank goodness they are helping somewhat with this new pain...

Sorry to hear about your hip pain, Jess. And yes, insurance companies are all about money. Sometimes they try to cut corners here and there and then end up paying more. I hope you get answers soon and your pain goes away.

                            Hi, Jess.
I'm so sorry to hear about this latest development. With a >70* lumbar curve, I can't see how your hips couldn't be involved. I have a shirt-tale relative whose scoliosis was the cause of severe hip degeneration. If the hips aren't sitting even, then they will respond to the uneven pressure on them, although you look surprisingly "level" when you stand. I hope you get your answers.

On a similar note, the shoulder surgeon wasn't convinced that much of the pain problem with my shoulder wasn't related to the scoliosis in my neck. He said it was a mess and I have a bulging C-6. He ordered a cortisone shot into the shoulder capsule to rule out nerve pain from my neck. It worked, so my pain problem is coming from my shoulder. The reason I say this is maybe there will be a way to rule in or out whether your pain is from your spine. I'm wondering if something similar could be done with you. But then again, I know what happened the last time you got cortisone. =(
I would just hate to see you "forced" into surgery before you are ready.

                            You are in my thoughts.
                            Be happy!
We don't know what tomorrow brings,
                            but we are alive today!

Irina..thank you so much for your kind concern...and your thoughts are much appreciated.
i hope you recover fully from your surgery, to be pain free.

rohr...so sorry to hear that your shoulder is still causing pain, but
i am glad the shot helped for now, and that it answered your question.

my daily pain at my right hip is so severe it shocks me....
i am pretty sure inflammation is involved, but i do not know if worsening lumbar curve is causing the inflammation....
i need a new spinal X ray anyway, as my latest is from Jan 2012....
but i never have had a hip X ray...i cannot see anything on my 2012
X ray that tells me anything is going on at hip level....i do see how the curve gets worse there....
this pain only started a couple of weeks ago, so maybe a new spinal X ray will reveal something going on there.

                              you are right, rohr...
i am very leery about steroid shots...if a doctor told me a very small
amount of the stuff might help the hip...i still do not know if i would
risk it...only because there is a chance if my cortisol disappeared again,
it might not come back...and Addison's disease scares me.
