  • Do Boston braces normally have the straps in the back?

Is it the case that a teenager can't get the brace on and off by herself? Isn't that dangerous like if it got caught on something?

My kid had a Charleston and she was able to put it on and take it off by herself. I never helped her with that.

    Hi Sharon,

yes, they are normally on the back on a Boston. I am quite sure most teenagers can easily take it off by themselves (how do you think they end up in so many lockers all day long). I could put mine back on, perhaps not as tightly as it was supposed to be, but I could do it.

I have another question... should a child ever have huge bruises everywhere if the brace is fitted correctly and isn't too tight?

          No, they should not.

BTW, how huge are we talking, and where?

Here are the number and size of the bruises.

              Number of bruises: 5

Size of bruises: One is the size of a hand. The rest are about 1-2 inches in diameter.

My kid had no bruises that I know of so this sounds crazy.

              Is this outright incompetence?

I'm with Gayle - this does NOT sound right at all.

Well we are dealing with a situation OUTSIDE standard medical care so anything goes I guess. The sky is the limit on bruising in both size and number.

Quackery does not become less so just because a parent is paying for it. Some struggle with this seemingly simple concept.

Are you sure they are true bruises or are they large dark spots? DD had them at first in several places but they were not bruises per say, more like skin pigmentation. They are normal I am told and they go away with time. I think it is from the pressure of the brace. They do not hurt.

Yes, the straps are in back and no, you cannot get them tight enough by yourself if you are a 13. My daughter can easily get it on and off, but not ever to the markings on the straps that indiciate how tight to make it. And over time you make it tighter and tighter.
