  • Ideas to help pain, also Dr recommendation near Columbus,OH

I have an S curve that was 26 deg. the last time I had an x-ray. My curve has not changed very much since it was found at 16 (I'm 28 now). The doctors found out I had scoliosis too late to try a brace, so I was basically told to live with it. However, it does cause pain in my lower back and shoulder/neck area. Sometimes the pain is ok, sometimes it hurts fairly bad, but it is always there to some degree. I have tried PT, I was on anti-inflammatory meds for awhile, and I have done Chiropractic and Massage. Nothing really seems to help, and I am someone that does not like to take medications all the time. My primary care physician basically told me to live with it, and I am not sure she really believes scoliosis can cause pain. Are there any Drs anyone would recommend near Columbus? And it anyone has any other ideas on pain management etc I would be grateful.

    Thanks, Jenna

How long ago were your curves measured? I had a 20 year old lumbar x-ray that I brought with me to Dr. Boachie. When new x-rays were taken that curve had doubled to 40 deg.
    Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction

      Hi Jenna,

I just saw your post today and wanted to tell you I went to OSU Spine Clinic and saw Dr. Fahardi. He is wonderful. He did a revision surgery on me May 9. I have an S curve and was previously operated on my thoracic curve. This time it was on my lumbar curve.

Please feel free to contact me anytime. PM me first and I'll give you my email. Plus, I live in Jackson so not far from you.

      Regards,
      Christyne

I worked with a doctor for 10 years who specialized in scoliosis and back problems and the day he told me scoliosis does not cause back pain is the day I lost all respect for the man. I continued to work with him for about 2 years because I was not willing to progress in any direction with my back but when things got worse, it took me talking with my GP and finding a new specialist to know I deserved better. This man did want to do surgery but he was so arrogant and flippant towards me I could not take it anymore. My advice to you is don't do what I did. Allow yourself better. Research the Internet, do what your doing here, but keep searching til you find that right person who listens to you. Your Primary does not have to understand. I would be extremely helpful if she did, but don't let her defeat you. If I could only rewind those years and be under better care!!!! I did all routes of pain management over those 10 years as well. Finding a good pain management doctor is key. It was only the last year that I tuned to medication as nothing was working and I knew I could not keep taking it for a lifetime.
Good luck! I hope someone has a doctor to recommend and you find a doctor who will listen to you. It makes an incredible difference.

          Hi Jenna,

Have you tried barre classes or yoga? I find that these classes really strengthen my core & back muscles, which usually feel tight. They combine lots of stretching and support work, which works for me, even with a fused spine. Have you tried massage therapy?
