The title references AIS but she was diagnosed at 5. A small typo perhaps.
She was in pain per her letter. Dr. Hey appears to be one of the surgeons who is completely on board with scoliosis being associated with pain in kids to his great credit.

This is a misleading. I am happy the little girl is doing great, but the picture shows the girl standing up straight, but it does not show her arching her spine, or bending to the side, or doing any other ballet moves. False advertising. You cant be a real ballet dance after having spine fused I don't think. Maybe you can do a few moves, but not most.

i totally agree...
ballet is like the opposite of fusion...involves bending, arching,
flexing, leaping, turning, twisting...almost all moves either
forbidden or very limited after any kind of spinal fusion...
i studied ballet many years ago...
didn't know then why i was so very much stronger on one
side than another...curves were small then, but i am sure
they were there...
i am happy for anyone who can dance after fusion...i
just doubt they can be involved in ballet...

Years ago when the MIT site was up, there was discussion of a ballerina in NY who had had surgery for scoliosis and was able to return to the dance...I wrote the doctor's name down and may have it...somewhere...Linda was the Moderator...

I've known ballerinas who were able to dance after surgery, though probably not professionally. If the fusion is thoracic, it would have relatively little impact on many bending moves.
The letter states that the child was diagnosed at 5 and apparently had surgery 8 years later, at 13.

well...thoracic surgery only i can see it...
even then...what of arching the spine...?
so many positions require arching the back...
which would be impossible with fusion of any length...
and as far as fusion that goes thru the waist...i cannot see anyone
in ballet being able to do so many moves IF they cannot bend
due to fusion that includes the lumbar.
