  • Bragging a bit

I thought I might brag a bit about my oldest daughter. She had scoliosis surgery two years ago. This spring she tried out for cheerleader, made it, and then her squad was picked the Outstanding squad at a National Cheerleading Association Camp. Anyway, she will be cheering at the Disney Land Christmas parade. Yes, she'll be on TV Christmas morning! No, she can't tumble, but she is an awesome cheerleader!! I feel like this is the only place I can brag. Does anybody except other scoli sufferers who have had surgery understand what she's been through? On another note, we will be picking up our 5th back brace tomorrow. Our oldest daughter wore three different braces and our youngest (13) is picking up her 2nd Providence brace. We are hoping 5 is our lucky number, no surgery and no more braces!!

Hey that's a good brag! Your daughter earned that!

              Congratulations!

And good luck with your second daughter. Most cases don't progress to surgery as far as we know.

Yes, you have to brag. Its mandatory, we totally understand. Sharon is right, we do have to earn it, and the kids are the best at it.

Sounds like you have a closet full of braces. Have you seen the pics of my “full” scoliosis brace?

The only way to show children who have scoliosis and their parents that they can have normal lives is by bragging about our kids. And it's great that her squad understands her limitations and emphasizes her strengths.

                  ~Emily

P.S. Maybe there should be a bragging thread, about the successes our kids have.

Pre-op curves were T45 & L65; curves post-op are approx. T31 & L34. Had a posterior spinal fusion from T8 to L3 on 7/12/07 at age 12. Doing great now in so many ways, but still working on improving posture.
Zach is 13 years old and very energetic.

Thanks and thanks for all the pictures! We should start a bragging page because I honestly don't think anyone understands what our children go through except us. I don't know what I would have done without this forum before my daughter's surgery. I will try to post pics after the parade and yes I get to go! My first trip to Disney World and I'm 44!!

This makes me very happy! After being through so much she is living her dream of being a cheerleader!

It gives us hope, that just because you need surgery or a brace does not mean you can't live your dreams

                              Awesome story!!!

Scoliosis does not define us. Does not limit your dreams.
