  • Asthma Post-op

So, I posted a while back that I was having trouble breathing, and had a bad cough since I had the surgery.

I already had asthma for years, but it was mainly activity induced, and I hadn't even needed an inhailer for the last 4-5 years. Anyway, my asthma symptoms have gotten gradually worse since I've had the surgery, to the point where I am now taking 2 asthma medications, and using a nebulizer 4-6 times a day. When I do my PT, it's very bad on those days.

My GP said I needed to go see an asthma specialist because the stuff I've been doing/taking doesn't seem to be working, so I went today and he had some interesting thoughts on why my symptoms are so bad right now.

He thinks because they moved my lungs during the surgery that it irritated my lungs so much that they couldn't handle my allergies during the spring. He also thinks that the muscles around my lungs are so tight because of the surgery, that it makes it hard for my lungs to relax or take a full breath.

Anyway, I was just curious if anyone else has had anything similar. It could just be the perfect storm of my allergies going crazy in the spring and the way my muscles are soo tight plus the irritation caused by the movement of the lungs during surgery.

It's annoying as all get out, but he has me taking some oral steroids to see if that'll calm me down. I go back monday for a bunch of tests to see what I'm actually allergic too.

My husband was laughing the other day about how it seems like I got all the bad genes in the family...I'm one of 5 kids and I'm the only one with scoli, asthma, and I'm extremely nearsighted. I'm the quintessential nerd. =)

Rebecca, I can't answer the question you want answered, but you just reminded me of me. In my case, I joke that I was just an old egg, because my Mom was 39 when I was born. I'm the only one of my Mom's or Dad's six children with scoliosis, I have by FAR the worst allergies of anybody, I'm the only one with asthma, and I am WAY more nearsighted than any of my siblings. Oh, and I have lousy teeth, even though I've always taken very good care of them. Nobody else with that, either. Poor us ;-)

I didn't have kids, feeling that for the good of mankind I need to be a dead end fork of the evolutional tree!

I hope my asthma doesn't get worse after my surgery!

haha! that is too funny. I know exactly what you mean =)

Seeing as how no one else has replied, I don't think your asthma getting worse is anything to worry about. Like I said, I think it was a perfect storm of allergies + surgery. And since I had never had bad asthma attacks, I didn't recognize it right away, and it got really out of control before I went to the dr. I thought I just had a cough. I guess if you have asthma, it's a good idea to be watching for any worse symptoms than normal. I would think for most people though, having the surgery would help in the asthma dept. Who knows, our bodies are so crazy! =)
