  • Healing of incision?

My daughter will have her incision stitched on the inside and just held together by the tape on the outside. We were told that by about 5 days the tape will be removed and then she will have dressings put on and then by the time she leaves the hospital she will not have anything on it. How does it heal that much in 7 days to not have it covered? It really worries me!

What is your experience? Anyone have a similar one?

    Hi...

I don't know why, but the wounds do heal very quickly. I had both anterior and posterior surgeries 3 months ago, at the age of 61. My incisions were treated like your daughter's incisions will be (internal stitches with Steri-Strips on the outside), and I was shocked at how quickly they healed. The Steri-Strips were all removed before I left the hospital on day 5 postop. I was actually able to get the incisions wet about 8 days postop. If I can heal that quickly at 61, I'm sure your daughter will heal at least that quickly.

    Regards,
    Linda

I didn't have external stitches, I had glue. They removed all coverings 4 days after surgery and I was allowed to take showers. My family were amazed that my scar appeared virtually healed.

This is a perfect example of how things have changed, even in the past six years. When my daughter had her surgery six years ago, she too had internal stitches with steri-strips. We were told to let the steri-strips come off on their own which took six weeks! She wasn't allowed to shower for 10 days and that was only if her incision wasn't draining. She left the hospital six days after surgery with a small bandage which wasn't removed until about 8 days post-op.

Simply amazing the progress we see every day!

              I agree Mary Lou.

Just between March 2008 and October 2009, apparently they made huge strides in bandage adhesive that doesn't take the skin with it. This carried a "Run AWAY!" warning in 2008 but turned out to be no big deal in 2009. I smell a Nobel... :-)

Hmm, my son has tiny staples (60+) on his incision, had them for his first surgery too. He's getting them out tomorrow morning. Anyone know why Dr. K opted for staples? Just curious. His incision is healing very nicely and he never did have any oozing or puffy pockets etc.

I'm glad that Halle wont have staples, but still nervous about how fast they take the tape off!

I'm not sure why my son has staples as it's never been brought up before. I would have preferred that he'd had strips to keep his incision closed but for some reason Dr. K used staples. They are really tiny but they do leave poke holes. No big deal as they will fade but still curious as to why he chose them.
