    • These kids are truly amazing - especially in this case, where Elias (and you) have been through SO much and have shown such amazing strength and courage.

No, this thread is not allowed to die because it will be such an inspiration to anyone just beginning the journey.

I continue to be amazed as well at the surgeons who literally perform miracles every day.

      • Maria, this journey has been so amazing and I still can not believe what we went through and how far we've come in such a short time. I have been helped so much by all of you guys here that I only hope our journey helps others, even if just a tiny bit.

I am still in awe of the Shriners generosity as well as Dr. Krajbich's plan of action for Elias and how well absolutely everything went. I still want to pinch myself to make sure I am not dreaming this all up.

Speaking of Shriners, talked with Bill M today, he's the gentleman that lives here in CR and came to visit me and we had tea and we talked about taking Elias to Portland for a consultation and probably surgery. We've been keeping in touch and he's been reading my blog and I (possibly Elias) will visit the local Shrine here in CR to talk about all about our journey to Portland and back. These men were so instrumental to getting Elias the help he needed and they'd love to hear all the details firsthand, so that's the plan. These men work so hard to raise money to help kids in need. :-)

The staples are staying in until Monday as a few of them are not quite ready to come out. That and we had a mix up with the receptionist and she had our appointment next Wednesday not today. That's fine, we needed a new script for the pain meds anyway and we'll get to see our own GP on Monday who was the one who originally diagnosed Elias' scoliosis. He will be so surprised by how different he looks!

          • Yes, I'll show the x-rays as well as actual pictures of his back. These are before and after pics: the first one was taken at the hotel in Vancouver BC two days before his surgery, the second one was taken at the hospital in Portland about five days after his second surgery/4-week halo traction.

              • Thanks Melissa, he went from a 110* curve with significant rotation to about 25*. Obviously we are very grateful to Shriners and Dr. Krajbich for all their amazing ability and help. Yes it took two surgeries, four weeks of halo/weight traction and living at the hospital for five weeks but it was so worth it. I still am in awe of everything but tickled pink that my baby has a new lease on life and bringing him home was a lot like when I first brought him home from the hospital as a newborn. :-)

Pre-op curves were T45 & L65; curves post-op are approx. T31 & L34. Had a posterior spinal fusion from T8 to L3 on 7/12/07 at age 12. Doing great now in so many ways, but still working on improving posture.

                          Elisa,

I know a lot of these men (Shriners) personally and I can tell you that there is nothing they enjoy more than to hear how well "their kids", as they like to call the patients, are doing.

David and I have gone to our local Shrine temple on many occasions. At first, it was so that I could tell my son's story and thank them for everything they had done for us. Now we attend fundraisers and other events a few times a year. I've even worked on a few projects with them (like a fundraiser last year to benefit the Kismet Shriners Transportation Fund) which was an honor for me to work side by side and see how incredibly selfless these guys are. I was just asked recently to assist with a screening clinic in the fall. The Shriners have become like family and I get so much satisfaction from giving whatever I can of my time and talents to the people who gave so much to us. I'm also a strong believer that more than anything else, kids learn from what they see their parents do and from the examples we set - so it's a great lesson for my son about giving back. He enjoys his time at these events as much as I do and knows many of the guys by name now.

I guess my point is that everyone will benefit from your involvement with your local Shriners - you, Elias and the Shriners themselves - who will be thrilled to see how well your son is doing and I'm sure will continue to do :-)

                          • I'm sure I'll be keeping in touch with the Shriners Maria, they are such an amazing bunch of people.

Elias gets his staples out tomorrow. It's been close to three weeks now since the second surgery and he's doing really well, he's cut down on his meds, doesn't nap during the day but does go to bed very early at night.

His appetite is great and we're all trying our best to feed him with nutritious food but we still need to fatten the boy up b/c he's still too thin for his stretch out torso and two surgeries, traction etc.
