Donating Blood?

Just curious - I'm curious as to how many people have had to donate their own blood before undergoing surgery? Or, did you have another family member who was a match donate for you? I know they filter your blood and reuse your own - but I didn't know if it was best to have someone donate for you just in case? Thanks.

Surgeons seem to differ in their requirements. I specifically asked that question of mine and he told me he only uses blood bank.

Rita, i donated 2 units, my surgeon asked for three, but my levels fell below the benchmark and therefore they crossmatched the third unit from bloodbank.
I had Cellsaver for my surgery. I lost 1 litre of blood and had 300ml returned to me. The decision for donating my own blood was entirely upto me.

My son donated 4 pint and only used 2. The other 2 went to a newborn that needed additional blood.

When I had my surgeries, i donated my own blood. After that, I have tried to give blood, but the hospitals will not take it. They said it is contaminated because of my rods.

Both of my surgeons told me that they did not want me to donate my own blood. Both of them used the cell- saver

how is one's blood contaminated by rods...?????
i have never heard of this...
so people with replacement hips or knees are told the same thing....?
