Sleeping With A Brace

Hi! I'm Harper. I have a providence brace that I only wear at night. I slept with it for the first time last night and it was aweful. It wasn't like it hurt or anything. I have a memory foam mattress topper that is 2 1/2 inches tall.
It felt really tight which I guess it's supposed to do. But the second my stomach started gurgling, I took it off. I wasnt sick. It just felt icky for the brace to be on. I also felt really confined. I could only lay on my right side or my back. Then I really wanted to sleep on my left side. But it dug into my butt. lol
Anyone have any suggestions for sleeping?

It's really hard to get used to a brace, especially sleeping...
maybe it's easier for you if you dont wear it to tight when you go to bed? if it's possible dont close it completely then you have a bit more room to move... every night you can close it a bit further and you're there

maybe it's easier for you to sleep without a pillow then? Or more than 1? When I had my 1st brace, I started using 3(!!) pillows...
but it helped...

i also put cuishons under the main pressure area of my brace, coz then it didnt hurt that much

just try every possibilty & you will b able 2 sleep with your brace soon

Hi Harper,

I agree that perhaps you should start with the brace straps a bit looser than they are supposed to be. Maybe after you are in a deep sleep, you could ask one of your parents to tighten the straps to where they are supposed to be?

Also, try to eat dinner at least 2-3 hours before going to bed. If you eat too much close to bedtime, it will make it more uncomfortable.

From what I hear, you should get used to, at least somewhat, it after a few weeks.

I must have missed the fact that Harper's post was so old - the spam post bumped it up - thanks for pointing that out. Maybe what I posted will help somebody else down the road so I'll leave it :-)

Ironically, just yesterday somebody mentioned Dr. Lee Segal. They must live in the area where Dr. Segal moved to (can't recall where - west coast maybe?) - anyway they asked Dr. Betz for a recommendation in their area and he recommended Dr. Segal. The mom (who posted on the VBS site) asked if anyone knew of him and I was pretty sure that was your daughter's surgeon right? Mom even mentioned that Dr. Betz told her he used to be at Hershey Medical Center.

So I offered to try to put mom in touch with you - if I hear back I may be emailing you - I think I still have your email address someplace!

Yep, you have an excellent memory! Dr. Lee Segal was Jamie's surgeon and he was at Hershey Medical Center for years. Did you know that at one point he worked with or trained under Dr. Betz? Dr. Segal is now in Arizona.

I wasn't aware that Dr. Segal had trained under Dr. Betz or that the two had worked together, I just know that apparently Dr. Betz thinks the world of Dr. Segal.

The first time we saw Dr. Segal, he asked us what we were doing there. Jamie and I looked at each other because he was holding a copy of her MRI results which clearly stated Scoliosis, etc. and we both thought he was crazy to ask such a question! After a brief silence he said, "I see you were seen by Dr. Betz. Why are you here? You are in excellent hands with Dr. Betz!" We instantly fell in love with Dr. Segal. He then went on to explain that he either worked with or trained under/with Dr. Betz, but for the life of me, I can't remember where he said! Sorry. Just looked up Dr. Segal's information. He did a fellowship at Children's Hospital of Philly, maybe that's where?

That same humble quality that Dr. Segal exhibited is one of the things I like best about Dr. Betz as well. He is not afraid to praise another doctor - I guess because these guys are secure and don't have big egos.

In fact, one time when I was, jokingly, telling Dr. Betz how one of the doctors on his staff was getting top billing on the VBS site because the parents all adored him, a big smile came across his face and he said "yes, we are lucky to have him".

Hi Harper,
I have a special ucsf brace so I don't know if it is different for you but what helps me to sleep is to keep it a little loose and sleep on my stomach with one pillow. I hope this helps!!

Hi, im Nicole. i know you probraly dont go on this site any more but if you do maybe we can chat. Im a little younger than you, but i got my brace around the same time and when i slept with it the fisrt night i wanted to take it off! i had a thick memory foam matress and it didn't help. Im on my second matress and there is still NO difference! I have a 35 degree curve and they say they talk surgery at 40 degrees!

If they talk surgery say that youll wear it during school. Kids may make fun of you but you'll find out who your real friends are. also whenever your not wearing it sit up straight and tall even if your back doesn't touch the rest. Also wear your brace whenever you have free time to PRERVENT surgery.

I may sound like I'm a pro with my brace but let me tell you I need help! Now do YOU have any tips?
