  • Do they see what i see

I hate having scoliosis.. It was like i woke up one day and there it was.. A part of me.. To stay.. And make my life misserable.. I'm trying not to let it take over my life but it is kinda hard when it's hard to move and everyday you wake up in some form of pain.. I hate the fact that i don't look like i use to.. I used to be very beautiful. I evey way, shape, and form. But now i am just twisted.. Is it just me or is everyone else seeing what i am seeing when they look at me..
    [U]I am twisted
My body is twisted and so am i. Sometimes i wish i would just die. I can't stand the pain i feel all of the time.. My hips twist one way, My ribs twist the other, My shoulders are uneven and one legs longer than the other. As everyday goes by i can feel my body giving way-- And hay someday i will be facing the other way.

    Carol,

Believe it or not most people don't notice that you're crooked. I had a thorasic curve of 79 and a lumbar curve of 44 and alot of the folks at school didn't notice until I pointed it out to them. Of course I knew and figured everyone else saw it as well. I have known of my scoliosis since about the age of 14, I'm now 49. Find a good doctor and see what can be done. I am so glad that I have had the surgery. I no longer have the sharp pains that I was having. I am only 4 1/2 months post op so I still have alot of numbness and tenderness, but it's better that the pain.

      Theresa.
Would you please share how you found a good doctor? I live in Oklahoma. Have a daughter that lives in Houston area. My last visit there I sat down with phone book to view specialist in Idiopathic scoliosis. I had Harrington instrumentation and spinal fusion in 1985 --nearly 20 years ago. I am now 63....and in need of seeing a doctor.......Thank-you

        Kim,

Why do you need to see the doctor this time? Just curious.

          Letty,

Having pain in neck and lower back area....Interested in seeing if the rod is still intact and has not broken....
Also the status of degenerative disc disease.
I lean more to a specialist dealing with adult scoliosis then to my general doctor in my home town.
Surgeon was honest with me (1985) when he went over the different things that could crop up in the future. Steming from being fused in the area of my curveture. It would place more stress on vertabraes above and below the rod & fusion. My age is also a factor in wear and tear on the body in general. Have also lifted and not taken the best care of my back....Other than that I am so glad that I had the surgery.

            Kim,

My doctor is Dr. Charles Reitman. He's chief of orthopedic surgery at Ben Taub. He is also an assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine. He specializes and had his fellowship in spine trauma and disorders of the spine. I go through Kelsey Selybold for my medical care and he was the surgeon for Spinal surgery. His credentials looked pretty good so we went with him.

Thanks for sharing these names with me. Will make a note. I felt assured that the Baylor Medical Center would have some of the best. The Harrington Rod that I have is a patent of a Dr. Harrington (deceased) who had a practice in Houston. another doctor in practice with him many years ago by the name of S. Fulton Tompkins (OKC), was my surgeon. I get to Houston (Sugar Land) once a year. Possibly could have my local physican attempt to refer me ...especially for a through back check-up. Trying for SSDI and probably will not get it because I have not been going to the doctor for many years.
              Thanks again!

                Hi Kim

                Hi Kim,
I recently joined a Yahoo group called fiesty flatbackers and there are many folks in this group who have had or are going to have revision surgery - the email address for the group is

FeistyScolioFlatbackers@egroups.com or you can visit the group at :

                http://egroups.com/mygroups

I have also found several other support groups for those of us with scoliosis at both Yahoo and MSN and I have gotten all sorts of good info off them - and slo there are always folks requesting Dr info or locations so it may be a good place to start.

I hope that this is useful for you and best of luck.
