  • Does anyone know if kyphosis can be the result of crash dieting during an adolescent

    growth spurt?

I was diagnosed with Schuermann's Kyphosis at 17 by a busy specialist I went to see, after my doctor or anyone else failed to notice it for 3 years prior to that. He was in too much of a hurry to go into the cause.

All I know is, at 14, I crash dieted and a month later had a curved spine and a torso that was short in comparison to my legs, with weaked shoulders. So I am wondering if I suffered muscle atrophy around the shoulders which caused my spine to curve through lack of support, and also my torso to stop growing.

Unless you have some sort of bone disease, I can't imagine how crash dieting would cause kyphosis or scoliosis.

      Hi, thanks for replying.

I wonder, therefore, if my kyphosis was due to a condition at, or before, birth, rather than through bad posture as a youth.

Any diagnosis on this would be a huge relief.

I can't diagnose you, but I do agree with Linda that external factors (crash dieting - which is horrid for your body ANYWAY, heavy backpacks, poor posture, etc.) do NOT cause scoliosis and/or Schuermann's Kyphosis ...

If you had scoliosis/kyphosis prior to then (due to some connective tissue disorder), I am pretty sure - at least I HOPE - another physician would have noticed something awry. That doesn't mean your genes weren't programmed for you to develop it later. You may never know - and you may or may not be able to trace back a familial link.

Just my opinion, but if your "specialist" is too busy to talk to you about your condition, find another one. You're a paying customer, sweetheart, and you have a right to a certain level of service. Demand it.

        Regards,
        Pam
