New here, but had to drop in to tell of my experiences with an inversion table. I'm pushing 70, so my options are limited and my ability to walk is severely impared. On the days when the pain is greatest I find that the inversion often helps. My wife give it to me for Christmas in 2002, and for the first few months I probably over did it. That was not productive. However, when the Vicodin isn't working, I still invert for a couple of minutes and it seems to ease the pain. If I'd get on a regular schedule, I think that would help, but I have never been able to do things like that logically. To me, it's one of those, "Can't hurt, might help", sort of things, so I use it when all else has failed. If your blood pressure is high though, I'd worry about inverting. Mine is not, but the blood rushing to the head feels like it could create a serious problem.

      inversion table

I recently purchased one of these inversion table and so far,,in my situation,it gives me some relief. Not a cure, but temporarily relief or pain management.Everyones situation is probably different ,but for me ,it helps.
      My situation:

I'm a 38 year old male. Otherwise healthy. Up until last spring I had no idea I had scoliosis, but now come to find out that I've had it all my life. For some reason,it never gave me any problems until recently,so I don't know if curve is getting worse or whats the reason .
Last spring I began to feel some numbness as i went for walks.I didn't think much of it.Thought maybe I pinched a nerve while sleeping or something.Few weeks went by,and the numbness turned pain.It would start in my hip area, then shoot down my right leg and make my foot go numb to point where I could not even feel it. If I would sit down the pain would immediatley begin to leave.Few more weeks go by and pain is so unbearable I could hardly stand it. Knowing something was wrong I set app up with my docotor to get checked out, still thinking I pinched a nerve or something. He looked at my back, gave me xrays and told me I have lumbar scoliosis.I then had a cat scan, mri, and was seen by a nuerosurgeon for a consultation.I also as put in therapy wher e I was put in traction for 20 minutes a sesssion. The traction seemed to give me temporary relief.Maybe half day .Nuerosurgeon told me my scoliosis is casued because I have a malformed vertabrae in my lower back ,which is causing the curve. This vertabrae has 2 pedicles on one side rather than 1 as it should, which caused the spine to curve. The scoliosis or curve is causing a disc to bulge out and the disc is pressing up against a nerve, which is giving me the sciatica type symptoms.I was given a sellective nerve root block, which helped the pain considerably, and now I can again walk short distances without major pain.I still do ,however, get numbness if I walk too far or long in my right leg. It starts in my knee area and goes to my foot, making my foot go numb to where I sometimes walk funny or stumble because I cannot feel my foot.Again,as soon as I sit ,the numbness leaves .I still also get lower back pain which varies in intensity from day to day.The neurosurgeon told me that without surgery,my xrays will never look any better. He doesn't know if the curve will get worse or not.I will be going for xrays every 6 months to monitor the situation. He says that surgery in my case would be vry complex and would most likely give me more problems than I have now,so does not want to go with the surgery at this point. So I have been living with this daily.
I recently by accident came across a flyer with an ad for an inversion table. I checked it out and purchased one. I have been using it now for almost a week and so far,it does give me some temporary relief. I know it is no cure or fix,but it does help with daily pain management and give temporary relief. I go on it 3x per day.
I'd be interested in anyone who has any of the same scoliosis situation,or anyone with any advice or feedback on the inversion table.
      Thanks

          Hi Scoliosisguy...

I'd like to encourage you to get a second opinion. You can find a list of scoliosis specialists here:

              Scoliosisguy...

Second opinion about surgery. Neurosurgeons aren't TYPICALLY trained to do large scoliosis surgeries. The specialists listed on the SRS website spend at least 20% of their practices treating spinal deformity patients.

              Where are you located?

              Regards,
              Linda

                    Inversion Table Questionable

Since my last post about using the inversion table, I did get on a more regular schedule with it and can't say there has been any improvement. At the very least, it helps me feel like I am doing something about the pain. Maybe that is a plus I guess.
