  • burning pain left hip

I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS IN 1991, AND TREATED FOR SPINAL STENOSIS AND THE SCOLIOSIS WAS NOT IMPRESSED UPON ME UNTIL A CERVICAL FUSION IN 2002 WHEN STANDING FILMS WERE TAKEN AND MY CURVES MEASURED. I HAVE THREE CURVES AND ONE HAS CHANGED DRASTICALLY OVER THE PAST YEAR, FROM 32 TO 46 AND THE PAIN IN MY LEFT HIP AND DOWN MY LEG INCREASED DAILY. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL SPECIALISTS IN THE CHICAGO AREA WITH DIFFERING OPINIONS ON HOW LONG I SHOULD WAIT TO HAVE SURGERY. MY MOST INTENSE PAIN IS A "BURNING, LIKE HOT LIQUID" THROUGHOUT THE LEFT SIDE OF MY HIP, BOTH FRONT AND BACK. MY MAJOR CURVE IS ON THE LEFT AND PROTRUDES CAUSING INTENSE PAIN. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE EXPERIENCES THIS HOT BURNING TYPE OF PAIN AS THE SPECIALISTS DO NOT SEEM TO BE ABLE TO GIVE ME ANY INFORMATION. I AM SEARCHING FOR INFORMATION ON ALL ISSUES REGARDING SURGERY AS I AM IN THE DELAY MODE NOW WEIGHING MY OPTIONS AS IT IS OVER WHELMING AND THE MORE I FIND OUT THE MORE SCAREY IT ALL BECOMES. THANKS .

Dear Betty- I have severe lumbar scoliosis (78 degrees). As with most lumbar scoliosis, my curve is to the left- lots of pain in the left side of my body (only my lower back gives me more). You are the 1st person I have seen post a message in all the forums I've read with burning pain in your hip. I, too, have suffered burning pain in my left hip for years. I can't tell you anything medically at this point. I've just recently decided to see a surgeon because of the progression, pain and onset of neurological symptoms. (I was diagnosed @ 23 with a 62 degree curve). I will most definately be asking about that burning hip pain and I'll check back to see if you've gotten any answers for yourself. (sorry, the appt. isn't until Sept. 16). At least you know you aren't alone anymore! Good luck and take care. -Gabrielle

      Gabrielle & Betty

I too suffered from burning left hip pain. I had ,y 1st surgery in Jan 02' to fuse my lower back and I will tell you that I have had no more burning pain only ever so slight tingling and that occurs only when I have over strained my back. I had surgery at 22 and I wish I would have done it sooner..certianly at 25 I would do it all over again. To not have the pain that I was having everyday is a blessing. Surgery may be scary but if you are determined to get through it and trust your doctor you will be fine. In time it will be worth it to you

If you have questions or concerns please let me know. I have had 3 surgeries for my scoliosis. I do not think that I know it all but I do understand the level of pain you are in.

        GABRIELLE,

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INFORMATION AND GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR APPOINTMENT IN SEPTEMBER I TOO AM SEEING A NEW SURGEON TO DISCUSS ONCE AGAIN MY ISSUES. I HAVE BEEN HAVING PHYSICAL THERAPY AND NAPRAPATHY TREATMENTS TO HELP WITH THE PAIN BUT SO FAR IT ONLY SEEMS TO MAKE IT WORSE. I THINK THAT THE SPINAL STENOSIS AND RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS CONTRIBUTE TO ALL THE PAIN ON MY LEFT SIDE BUT I WISH I KNEW FOR SURE AND WHAT COULD BE DONE TO RELIEVE THE BURNING, IT IS SO INTENSE ACTIVITIES OF ANY KIND SEEM IMPOSSIBLE MOST DAYS. KEEP IN TOUCH.

          SKOOTER:

THANK YOU FOR YOUR POSTING. WERE YOUR CURVES EXTREMELY ELEVATED TO HAVE THREE SURGERIES? THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THE SURGERY WOULD HAVE TO BE DONE IN TWO STAGES, FIVE DAYS APART AS THEY COULD NOT STABILIZE ME IN ONE PROCEDURE DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THE THREE CURVES. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE PAIN WOULD PROBABLY STILL BE THE SAME AS WELL AS THE DEFORMITY OF MY BODY AS IT IS NOW. THE DEFORMITY I DONT MIND, IT IS THE FACT THAT THE PAIN WOULD STILL BE THERE. I FIND THAT MOST DAYS THE BURNING IS SO INTENSE THAT I CANNOT PERFORM BASIC ACTIVITIES. PHYSICAL THERAPY, NAPRAPATHY TREATMENTS, AQUATIC THERAPY, MEDS, ETC -- NONE OF IT SEEMS TO HELP. WHAT WERE THE PROCEDURES YOU HAD DONE?

TAKE CARE AND KEEP IN TOUCH.

HI my names sandra i'm from the uk i have resently seen a consultant after four years of pain, i have a curve in my spine which no one as actually said it's scoliosis but after reading up i figure that's what it is.
I'm leaving this note for betty as i identify with the burning sensation which i've had for over tweleve months now first in my right hip and down my right leg and now on the left side of my middle back were my curve is, my gp and consultant seem to think it's because i have trapped nerves in my spine and as my spine continues to curve it's making it worse as the vertibra close together. I hope this can help you in some way as i know the feeling of not knowing.

            san.

              burning pain

              s olive,

thank you for your posting, i think that your pain is from the spinal stenosis as that is what you describe with the pain, the spinal column is narrowing thus causing nerves pressing due to the scoliosis curve. i have had a nerve block to help the pain down my leg but it did nothing to the hip pain. everything is on the left as that is my major curve of the three. have you seen an orthopedic surgeon to evaluate the spine issue with standing xrays to determine that it is in fact scoliosis? take care and keep in touch. i struggle with the pain as it increases each day, i also have rheumatoid arthritis which gives me pain so some days i can barely function and others i can do basics.

                hi Betty
I have seen an orthopedic surgeon he's the one who's sending me for an mri scan just to check what's happening inside as i'm so well balanced on the outside. I've had the curve since i was a teen but never had any problems with it until four years ago, i've not really had chance to sit and ask loads of questions, he has said that it could have been sorted years ago and has said he'll do everything he can to put it right with surgery,so i'm just waiting now to go for my scan.
Here in the uk no one seems to use the name scoliosis,i can't even find a uk site that gives any info but i will be asking next time i visit the hospital as the discription is the same. I'll keep you posted and thanks for the posting.

                  Scoliosis Association (UK)

                  Hi Sandra,

There is a Scoliosis Association (UK) at
                  http://www.sauk.org.uk/

Also, less useful, is the British Scoliosis Society at
                  http://www.liv.ac.uk/HumanAnatomy/phd/bss/bss.html

Hope you might find something of help there. It's true the UK (my home country) is not as "connected" as the US. Good luck! Laura
