  • Adult Bracing

THERE IS A PROGRAM THRU THE NAME CURVEBENDERS, THAT USES A SPECIAL BRACE FOR ADULTS AND A SPECIAL EXERCISE PROGRAM THAT SUPPOSED TO REDUCE A CUVE TO 40%. HAS ANYONE DID THIS OR HAVE ANY INFORMATION ? I HAVE EMAILED THE DOCTOR AND IT SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT WAY TO AVOID SURGERY. MY CURVE IS 45 DEGREES......I AM ALSO A MALE THAT IS 44 YEARS OLD WITH PAIN THAT IS GETTING WORSE.............

I've never heard of a single adult who has gone through one of these bracing programs, discontinued the brace at the end of treatment, and had their improvement hold.

Anything external that pushes against one's curve(s) will temporariy reduce them. But, once that pushing force is removed, the curve(s) will return to their previous position.

If you want to try this program, I'd advise two things:

    1) Ask to talk to adults who have gone completely through the program and whose curves are still reduced. Make sure you see that they had a significant curve to begin with, and that you get to see before and after x-rays.

    2) Get a money back guarantee.

            Hello @ all,

There was a site that explained why a cure cannot be straightened with PT...Let him read that...it changed my mind very fast
            ...

You don't believ this information, do you? I mean, there are no references, there is no proof of the information given, the only message is: Alternatives dont work. For me it sounds like an advertisement for scoli-surgery. There is no study behind it, no example and no reference to any scientists - very strange.

I have 45° lumbar and 33 degrees thoracal. I am 23 years old and just started waring a brace. For me surgery is no option. I have no pain and I can live with my appearance. I do not see the advantages of a fuses spin. There are too many risks during the surgery and too many possible problems after surgery.

The doctor who treats me has several patients in adult age who are wearing a brace. Most of them do this in order to reduce their pain - quite successful! However, he has several patients who are wearing their braces in order to get a correction, including me. Adult bracing is hard, but sometimes successful. He has patients who succeeded in reducing their curves permanmently.

A famous scoli-specialist (Dr. Cheneau from France) said that correction with braces is possible in any age. BUT what you can reach within one month when you are a child, you need 1 year when you are adolescent and 10 years when you are grown up.

I do not expect wonders and I am not sure wheather I have the strange to go through this for such a long time (I should wear the brace as much as possilbe - the best would be 23/7). But also if I cannot improve my curve - it wont get worse during treatment. My disks can "relax" and I am not in danger to get pain.

At the docor's I have seen X-rays from children with kyphosis and very deformed vertebraes. During growing it is definitly possilbe to change the endplates and the deformation of the vertebraes, under the condition of a good and highly-correcting brace.

One example of a successful treatment with braces:
            http://www.scoliosislife.net/forums/...pic.php?t=1453

            Here another one:
http://skoliose.net/forum/viewtopic....653a1b22#17224 (sorry this is in german)

These are just two of many examples of a successful treatment with a brace. So, how can someone say that only surgery can correct scolioses?

            best regards,
            Lilith

              Lileth...

Before critiquing my website, perhaps you'd like to actually read it. There are plenty of references on my website, to studies that show that bracing does work.

                Dear Linda!

I have to appologize. I really did not want to critisise your work! I am sorry, I really did not have a look on the rest of your website and I really do think that you did a great and important work! However, in my personal opinion, this special part of information which was mentioned before, is wrong.

                regards,
                Lilith

You're not going to believe this. I called the doctor listed on the curvemenders site and he referred me to the copes doctor. I thought all along that the 2 methods are totally different but he said they are the same except that he doesn't recommend the copes nutrition part and their braces are a bit different but the method of treatment is the same. Shock, shock, shock!

                          Greg,
I'm sorry that you seem so frustrated/afraid of surgery. I have to agree with Linda. As an adult your bones are "hard" and set. On the one web site that was recommended to you there was a pic of a 16 yr. old. She may very well have obtained mild correction of her curve, but and this is a big BUT if she is still growing her bones are "soft" and bracing will help. So unless you are still a kid and still growing, bracing won't do a thing for you.

We all have to do what we think is best for ourselves. Take care and I hope that you don't lose to much money or time in learning about your scolosis.

Gregg, what sort of pain are you experiencing?

If it is muscular you might find that something like yoga, or Alexander Technique might help. There are posts about these elsewhere in these Forums.

I found that Alexander Technique almost completely eliminated my mild, intermittent back pain, which may or may not have been scoliosis related.

Please note that I am not saying these methods will reduce your curve. My real curve is not noticeably different, although the rotation appears to be less, but my compensatory curve has almost completely disappeared.
