  • facet rhizotomy

My daughter, who will be turning 18 this month, has what most consider mild scoliosis but has lived with severe pain for about 2 years. Finally after multiple visits to various physicians we finally had a Dr. identify the cause of her sometimes intense pain -- the facets. After the injections to identify the locations and confirn the diagnoisis she will be scheduled for facet rhizotomy.
My research has conflicting information on longevitly of this treatment. Anyone out there had experience with this procedure that can offer advice and knowledge of experience?
    Thanks,
    Janice

    facet rhizotomy

Hopefully your daughter has been evaluated by a scoliosis specialist plus a second opinion. If she has progressive scoliosis and you just try to treat the pain, then her curve will keep progressing, and the cause is not adressed--and trouble is sure to follow down the pike.

Most patients I have seen needing this procedure have severe arthritis of the spine or perhaps injuries with chronic pain.

Here is a link explaining the procedure: http://www.spineuniverse.com/display...cle200.htmlain

Just make sure her curves are not progressing.
    Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction

        facet rhizotomy

Hi. I am new to this board although my 16 (almost 17) year old daughter has been diagnosed w/scoliosis for two years - but it was "brewing" for quite some time before that. My doctor wouldn't listen to me or give me a referral to an ortho so finally I went to the ortho's without an insurance referral (just said I forgot it) and they called the primary to get one while I was there. Thank goodness because I was correct - she had scoliosis alright - 30 degree right thoracic. I wish she had been braced sooner but the ortho said he "probably would have just watched" to see if it progressed prior to bracing. Personally, I don't think "watching" is a treatment but what do I know. Anyway, I sidetracked. Although, my daughter has moderate scoliosis she has quite a bit of pain as well. (We had the MRI, dye and all the other tests to rule out a cause other than idiopathic scoliosis) She just had her first series of facet injections. I have not heard of facet rhizotomy. I will google it. Thanks for the post!!!
