  • Spine Surgeon - Southern California

Does anyone have experience with a good orthopaedic surgeon in the Orange County area. My sons have been treated for several years by a doctor who is no longer available so I need to find another. I have been recommended to Dr Amininian in Orange and I have heard good things about Dr Mudiyam in Fountain Valley.

    Hi Charlie,

I can't give you any info on drs. in Orange Co., though I know there are some excellent surgeons to be found there. I can say for sure that Children's Specialists Orthopedic team in San Diego has an excellent reputation, and our experience with them has been as good as it could be. I have also heard wonderful things about the drs. at Shriners Hosp. in Los Angeles, can't think of the names offhand right now. Good luck in your search.

I see dr. Robert Pashman at Cedars Sinai in Beverly hills. I am not sure if he works on kids. Also i have had my first two surgeries done in Loma linda childrens hospital by Dr. Shook. He specializes in peds. That isnt too far from orange county.
      Good luck...

While I am sure Dr. Shook at Loma Linda is great...I would NOT recommend seeing Dr. Bunnell there. I saw him for about 2 years and WAS NOT pleased with the treatment I recieved (or did not recieve). If you are willing to travel Dr. Siambanes in Riverside [EDIT] Shriners in LA is great as well and everything there is free of charge. Also, both of the docs you mentioned (Dr. Aminian and Dr. Mudiyam) are great surgeons in your area. I would see them myself if I lived closer.

Well i have pretty much decided on Dr Aminian (mostly because of insurance and geographic considerations). Have been in for an initial visit. He seems ok, but probably well know better after a few more visits. The boys were seeing the same doctor for almost 4 years so im sure it will take them a while to adjust.

              Hi Charlie-

I live in HB (Orange cty) and my son goes to Dr. Skaggs and previously Dr. Tolo at Childrens Hosp Los Angeles. I highly recommend but in reading your post I am wondering how severe the scoliosis is in your sons as my son's scoli is very severe and he has had 9 back surgeries so far. That is why we go so far, had to have a specialist in Ped Ortho, originally went to UCLA and saw Dr. Oppenheim (also good) but he sent us to Shriners LA then we got referred to CHLA as my son had to have major surgery to insert him in a Halo and do traction then rods.

May I ask how severe the scoli is and if surgery has ever been done? Who do you currently see? And is this Dr. A in orange at CHOC? I do know someone who takes her son to CHOC for his spina bifida and has also seen the Ortho there as he now is getting scoliosis and will need surgery for that soon.

              Good luck.

Palo Alto may be a bit far for you, but Dr. Lawrence at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital is great!

They have a great kid-friendly atmosphere and a nice staff as well.

                Good luck!

                    We live in Tustin Ranch.

My daughter goes to Dr. Skaggs at Children's LA. Our next appointment is Feb. 28th - and I'm hoping her curves have held!!! We both really liked Dr. Skaggs and everyone in the office. It was really geared to children and families (my daughter is 14, but still a kid).

She also saw Dr. Bhatia at UCI. He was very very nice and had great credentials (childrens spine fellowship, etc), but we decided on Dr. Skaggs because he only works on children whereas Dr. Bhatia works on both children and adults.

Dr. Aminian was also recommended to us, but we chose to take the ride up the freeway to Dr. Skaggs based on his reputation.

                    Good luck to you.

Dr. Arminian (sorry if I spelt that wrong) was recommended to me for surgery but that he was less personable- he is with St. Jude which I would absolutely recommend- every experience and appointment I have had with that hospital has been wonderful- I had surgery there with a different doctor for a shoulder problem and would definitely go to them again. I instead see Dr. Ali for my back- I was told by one of the spine PAs that he would be more open to surgery and other options for my back where as Dr. Arminian would probably say you're in your 20s you degree is less than 40 so lets monitor and not worry about it- not the answer i'm looking for so I went to Ali (who pretty much told me the same thing anyways) instead.

Dr. Bahtia (again sorry on spelling) at UCI has great credentials but I found him to be very impersonal. I was seen and rushed out the door before I could really get my questions answered. His PA said she couldn't tell I had scoliosis when I walked in. I told him about my shoulder issue and he said it was probably related to my scoliosis- turns out it was a torn rotator cuff but instead of referring me to a shoulder person or getting an MRI he said work on it in Physical Therapy.
