  • Need some info

    Hello,
My daughter has 3 curves in her back, at our first set of x-rays one curve was 19, one was 37, and one was 20. She has been wearing a brace, with much resistance mind you. We have an appt. this Thurs. for another set of xrays. Her back has gotten visibly worse, and I fear they will recommend surgery. I am taking her to University of Michigan, she is in the care of Dr. Caird. Wondering if anyone has heard of this surgeon, or has any suggestions as to the best place to take her. Thank-you

    Hi...

I've never heard anything about Dr. Caird. If your daughter does have to have surgery, be sure to get at least one other opinion. You can find a list of scoliosis specialists here:

        Hi...

That would be a good list to put together.

You might start by asking how many surgeries s/he performs on like patients each month or year. I would also ask about training. Ultimately, if you're in the US, it would be good if the surgeon did a spinal deformity fellowship. Ask the surgeon for at least 3-4 references, and be sure to call them. If there's a support group in your area, contact them. They can often steer you to the surgeons with good reputations from other scoliosis patients. You can find a list of support groups here:

        http://www.scoliosislinks.com/SupportGroups.htm

There are a few good books that might be helpful. Scoliosis Surgery: The Definitive Patient Reference is available on the National Scoliosis Foundation's main website (http://www.scoliosis.org), or directly from the author at http://www.curvedspine.com. Also, Scoliosis Sourcebook by Michael Neuwirth.

        Good luck!

        Linda

          Thank you!!

This is a good START!! I just feel soooo very lost, so I apreciate all the help I can get thrown my way. It is so hard to organize all my thoughts on this due to all the things fluttering around in my head, just don't know where to start, and want to make all the right choices...
