Hello, I was diagnosed in January and I had xrays taken with the curve measuring 22/26 that was read by the radiologist. I went to see a specialist and he said my curves were 26/38! He told my mother that if she wanted he would put me in a brace. I was told I am a 2-3 on the Riser scale and still had growth left. He seemed to only talk about surgery. I am will come back in 6 month when my mother asked if she noticed any change should she call he said no that curves do not move that fast. We both walked away slightly uncomfortable, with the doctors attitude. When my mother asked how I could be first diagnosed at 22/26 did this mean I had changed that fast and he said no that there is a plus or minus of 2 degrees. When I had my xrays there the tech had to take it five times to get it right! My mom has applied to Shriners, is this the right thing to do. I have been reading and it seems to me that maybe I should be braced (not that I want to) the doctor seem to think my curves would progress with or without the brace.

    Thanks

Fom everything that I have read surgeyr isn't usually done with curves at your measurement. The difference in numbers has more to do with math. They use geometery to measure the curve. To see if the curve got worse would take another set of x-rays.

Sometimes some small thing can mess up an x-ray picture. A little twitch or the camera not in the right place makes a big difference. As advice for your mom, GO TO ANOTHER DOCTOR!!!! Get a second opinon. It is YOUR body. If you are more comfortable trying a brace 1st then that is what you should do. Your curves are not that bad, they could be worse. It is rare to need to rush a surgery like my surgery was rushed. My curves got worse very very quickly and rushing things was the only way. When curves are very bad they might go faster too.

Your curve can get worse fast like mine did, but my curves were much bigger. Whatever doctor you go to next, ask lots of questions. And make sure they get answered.

I was in a brace at 10 and my curves were 19/27 and the brace stopped my curve from getting worse. I am now a mother with 2 children so look for another doctor if needbe and I was told that your curve changes a few degrees depending on the day so you can measure different at times.
