  • Old surgery/new pain

Hi, I'm new to the board. I'm 34, I had my first surgery at age seven and then another surgery at the age of 14. That's when I had a Harrington rod placed. I also had ribs removed...that was during my first surgery. I have done well with only minor pain now and then, that is until just in the last few weeks. Now I have constant pain in my lower back. I just saw a spinal Dr this past Monday and had an MRI that afternoon. The results aren't in yet, but the Dr. seems pretty certain that I have a disc problem. I'm not really sure what's in my future. The doctor mentioned injections and possibly even another surgery. I don't really want to undergo another surgery but I don't want to contain on with this pain either. None of my pain meds seem to make a difference. I guess I'm just looking for advice. Thanks

    Hi Justlee...

I can imagine how horrendous it is to have to think of potentially underging another surgery. If surgery has a high probabililty of relieving your pain, however, I think you'll find it worthwhile.

My advice to you would be to be sure that the surgeon you're seeing has a lot of experience in treating scoliosis patients with prior fusions. If you'd like a recommendation for a second opinion in your area, you just need to let everyone know where you live.

    Good luck with whatever happens.

    Regards,
    Linda

        Hi Justlee...

There may be stronger pain medication. You might also get some relief from physical therapy or alternative therapies.

        Where do you live?

            Justlee...

You don't live that far from the guy who is arguably the best scoliosis revision surgeon in the U.S. Dr. Mike LaGrone is in Amarillo, TX. If he can't help you, there probably is no help.

There are some stronger medications that might help you in the short term. You might want to try to see a pain specialist.

Well I went back to the Doctor this past monday, he said I had a detiorating disc and some nerves pinched between the disc. But he said he didnt wan to do surgery right now he wants me to some PT and maybe some shots first. He did give me a brace for my back that helps some but not much. I am afraid PT and the shots wont work then I am back to square one with the same pain. If anyone has anymore ideas please let me know thank in advance.
