  • Menopausal and Scoliosis

    Hello,
I am new here and I am a French woman (excuse my English !).
I am 46 years old and I was diagnostic a double scoliosis 45° at 6 years old. I wore a Milwaukee since 13 to 20 years old and my life was nearly normal to my 40 years old when I've got more and more back pain.
I am worry about menopausal and I would like to know what could be the consequences on my scoliosis during this period and often what could I do to limited the bad effect on my bone.

When I was young (20) doctors said me that It would be worse and painful for me after 40... it is true... But they didn't give me advices to limit this !!

    Thanking you

    Menopausal and Scoliosis

    Hello,

I do not know what might be the effects of the menopause on your bones and I do not know what might be the consequences on your scoliosis, but I do know that Backlife might help you to relief your pain. It is a device that uses Continuous Passive Movement. I use it every day twice for 12 minutes. It has relieved my pain immensely. Maybe it will help you as well. I hope very much for you, because I know what it means to suffer.

      Thanking you

      Thank you Cathrine,

It is kind of you to give me this advice concerning this device to improve the painful due to my scoliosis. Unfortunatelly, I've got another health problem and I have a pacemaker because my heart was too bad functionning so a lot of electronic devices are forbidden for me ....

But perhaps your advice could be usefull for somebody else

          Maicaud,
Good question! I have gone thru menopause, had surgery for Flatback etc.

As long as you maintain your bone mass, the bone in your spine will stay strong. But having said that, your scoli could very well continue to deteriate. Patients with a curverature of 40 or more degrees have a tendancy to become unstable and the spine will continue to rotate. This may be what is causeing your pain.

You need to find a doctor that specializes in adult scolosis or at the very least an orthopedic doctor that has experience with scolosis

            Thanking you Sandy

What you said is not very funny but I am afraid you are on the true because I heard a lot of time this : complication after 40.
I have an appointment with a specialist soon...

If you could give me other experiences, specially with no surgical scoliosis....

            Thanking you

              Maricaid,
My situation is very similar to yours. I wore a Milwaukee brace also when I was a teen-ager. I was told it would not progress but after having two children- it has. I noticed a lot more pain with it after I became 40. It seemed hard to walk and to get out of a chair at times. Getting in and out of my jeep was hard because I could not bend my neck. Often I would have to roll myself out of bed.
I started physical therapy last November and taking Celebrex. I stopped doing that in Jan. but I' m continuuing to exercise w/ a big ball and three pound weights at home. I feel so much stronger and better. I have stopped taking the Celebrex. I was strongly considering surgery last fall but will now try to put it off as long as possible. I have a twelve year old son so I would like to wait.
Just some thoughts- everyone is different but p.t. might help you.
