  • What Items are Most Appreciated Post-Surgery?

    Hi everyone,

One of my best friend's sister, MaryAnn, is having fusion surgery tomorrow. I have gotten to know Mary Ann pretty well over the years and I wanted to send her a gift once she is home recovering. (She is approx. 30 years old and lives alone, although she is going to spend the first week or so recuperating at her parents home for the extra help and because there are no stairs to climb there, etc.).

I was just wondering, for those of you who have been there, what type of gift would be most appreciated? I was thinking of maybe some good books/reading material - but would appreciate any other suggestions.

Many thanks - and please keep MaryAnn in your prayers,

    Hi Maria...

I personally didn't have enough concentration to be able to read books for several months. If you're close by, I'd actually recommend that you offer to cook a meal or run errands.

hmmmm.........how about some music cd's? puzzles or a board game that can be enjoyed with company? gift certificates to a favorite restaurant, take-out or smoothie/health juice place, movie/blockbuster; a basket loaded with favorite goodies. or one of those "grabber" items (a pole with a grabber at the end) to help pick things up off floor, pull up a sock, etc. (not a very fun gift, but practical). Those are the things that immediately come to mind.

I think most adults get a grabber from the physical/occupational therapy group in the hospital.

Thanks to all of you for those great ideas - some of which I hadn't even thought of. I'll definitely keep them in mind when deciding what to bring.

Most of all, MaryAnn and her family, particularly her sister and her Mom, were so happy to hear that you would all be praying for her. That really meant a lot to them - they thanked me repeatedly for asking all of you to say a prayer for her tomorrow.

Thanks again and I'll let keep you posted on how she's doing.

A long handled shoe horn was a really useful thing to me. Practical and not exciting I know....

                  Maria,
I would have loved to have someone clean my house/do a load of laundry/grocery shop/cook a meal after I got home. Your friend will not be up to doing just everyday tasks for a while, so having someone come in and help out is a real treat.

I know I couldn't have read a book for months after. And most movies, I feel back to sleep in my recliner.
