  • Heya - sum advice 4 the new girl please!

Heya guys. My names Jenny and I'm 16years old. I was diagnosed with scoliosis ( I think its about 30degrees but I'm not sure because the hospitals in England are vague on the details. lol) last year and I'm due to have my op soon.
I was just wonderin how long it took everyone to recover because I'm supposed to start college 1st September and I'm scared I won't be ready.
I'm scared of this op but I'm sick of looking how I do - all twisted like. Does anyone else eva feel like this??

    thanks

is it in your thoratic or lumbar area? A 30 degree curve isnt too bad, and unless it is causing physical pain i dont see a need to have surgery. Maybe you should find another doctor to get a second opinion from, i would always suggest that to someone who might be getting surgery.

my recovery was about 4 months, but you may not feel completly normal again till about a year later. But that doesnt mean you can carry on with your normal activities. You just cant like, play sports or stuff like that during those 4-6 months

I had surgery 17 days ago, and I'm feeling a lot better already. They had me up and walking a little bit at a time the day after surgery. My doctor says I'll be fine to start school on time, which for me will be 5 1/2 weeks after my surgery. I don't know your situation though... ask your doctor what he thinks.

hi guys, thanks for your replies - they are really helpful. I'm having surgery at Leeds, I think its Jimmys but it might be the General. I know 30degrees isnt really that big but it does hurt quite a bit and the guy who recommended surgery to me IS the second opinion. lol. Thanks for the recovery times too, they have put my mind at rest because I've never ever had surgery before in my life and so i dont know how long it takes to recover... i av never even spent a night in hospital!!!! lol.

Yea i guess if it hurts a lot then its really necessary. Dont worry about the hospital, its actually not that bad. You sleep through like 90% of it. But i ain't gonna lie, the food is pretty bad in most hospitals.... My physical therapist there told me if i sit up and walk from one end of my room to the other and back i would get some jello. I was like.... okay ill do it but ill pass on the jello. haha. The things they reward you with....

Hiya, my name is Jade and I'm also 16, starting College this September too and I live in England.

My curves are 26 and 31 and I couldn't believe that you are getting treatment! I envy you so much. I'm not allowed treatment until my curves reach 40 degrees or more so I am frustrated, plus I get pain too!

I haven't had surgery, so I'm sorry for the lack of help, but do PM me or add me on msn if you have any problems.

Thanks for the replies guys. the hospital I'm supposed to be operated on at is Jimmys in Leeds and it is literally like a CELL!! there are no windows, nada! But thankfully, I'm going private so I HOPE the food is better. Jello..... what an interesting choice of treat! I would be hoping more along the lines of maltesers! lol.
To Jade, I wasn't supposed to be having surgery - the first guy I went to see told me it wouldn't be a problem and wouldn't cause me any pain whatsoever so I might as well just leave it. But then the pain did start so he referred me to a specialist called Professor Peter Dixon (dont know if you have heard of him?) and he said that if I wanted surgery I could have it. I'm a really lucky girl and I'm kinda dreading but kinda looking forward to next year when I finally have my op.
