I wear a brace, and I have heard of people going to a chiropractor to help their spine. Is this something that would help me? I have an S shaped curve, I am 15, and have had a brace for almost 2 years.

    Hi Laura,

A chiropractor will be able to help with muscle soreness and the tissue surrounding the spine, but won't "fix" your scoliosis. There are some GREAT exercises on this website: http://www.iscoliosis.com that encorporate yoga and Pilates and other stretching exercises specifically for people with scoliosis, teenagers especially. My 17 yr old daughter has chronic pain in her back (between her shoulderblades). By keeping her abs strong and exercising regularly, her pain is minimal.

    Good luck

Hi ..I go to a chiropractor and wear a brace. I wear a Copes Brace, and when I go to the chiropractor, he adjusts my spine, and puts me on a 'flexion distraction' table..lol, i'm not really sure what that means..but it just bends me up and down for twenty minutes..it doesn't hurt or anything, and actually, I feel a lot better after I have the treatments done. I usually go in there two times a week..it's required with the * Copes Brace Protocol *..By the way, I'm 14. If you have any questions or just want to talk, my AIM screename is crazycake906

Seeing a chiropractor may be a good idea to relieve pain, but it is only a temporary solution. The pain will keep coming back and you will end up spending a lot of time and money trying to keep it away, year after year.

As for chiropractic work to correct scoliosis, I doubt that it will work. There seem to be some people who have found that visiting a chiropractor stabilizes their back (meaning that their curve does not increase of decrease), but seeing a chiropractor as a means of treating scoliosis is widely rejected by scoliosis specialists. On the other hand, it is worth a try to avoid surgery.

I hope I've been helpful and GOOD LUCK!

I used to go to a chiropracter(spellling??). I personaly think chiropracters STINK. mine had me visiting him 3-4 times a week!!! And, he kept saying, "O it looks like it's getting better!!" But in reality, my curve was getting worse by about 1.3 degrees a month! But, I always thought my chiropracter was a QUACK!!!!

I started going to the chiropractor in the 6th grade-3x a week for 9 months when my curves were mild.(1954). It did not work! We wasted money.
We had no insurance. It helped the spasms, but personally it was like massage. I also think a chiropractor who promises correction for scoliosis is committing malpractice. If the curve stops progressing during treatment then it probably would have done that if you did nothing and saved time and money.

            I ended up with a 100deg curve.

I forgot to tell yall what else my chiropracter had me do. He had me raise my left arm so it was a right angle with my body. Then he would put pressure on certain areas, like my forehead or whatever, and push down my arm. On most of them I was supposed to try to keep him from pushing down my arm. He also put me on these REALLY NASTY alfalfa pills. The other REALLY NASTY pills he put me on tasted like a mix between pepper, and something else really nasty! We finally quit going to him after I got my brace. My mom and I always always call him Dr. Quack!!!
