  • Ways to cope....

Hello all! Happy 4th of July! If anyone's reading today- any suggestions about how to cope with lower back pain?? I've been sitting in our spa all morning trying to alleviate it. The pain makes it difficult to walk. I have a dr's appt on Wed to determine when surgery will be needed. I want to be up to watching the fireworks and enjoying a barbecue with family and friends.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Wore Milwaukee brace for s- curve...told it was not to get worse. No major pain until reached my 40's- feel fortunate there- now lower curve is changing along with deg discs

    Hi Colleen,

I had just the same problem in the years before surgery - 40s to 55, which is now (surgery last November). I found the lower back pain increased but could be kept at bay by various things: exercise, especially swimming and walking (yoga would have been good too), alexander technique for a while, cranial osteopathy sometimes, hot water bottle when too tired for anything else. Plus trying to remain relaxed and not stressed, which is not always possible. I found the pain went in waves - sometimes livable with, sometimes unbearable and depressing. The last months before surgery were particularly bad - last holiday really spoiled by it - probably because I was also tense about the surgery.

Since the surgery (T2-T12 fused) I've had almost no lower back pain, and if the upper back pain reduces as it probably will over the next year, I will be a great deal better off.

    Good luck,

    Lavinia

      Lavinia,
Thanks so much for the reply. I've had significant pain on/off since January. I was cleaning our tile grout- thinking nothing of it. Anyway, I' ll try some of your recommendations. I have always been a hiker, have watched my weight and do an exercise routine. Really depressing when I'm not able to be active because of the pain.
I will be showing your post to my husband. He hates to see me go through surgery if the pain will not diminish. So it was good to read your positive note regarding it.
Got through the 4th okay just not as much fun!

        Hi there la

I am another person with scoliosis diagnosed when I was 15 had absolutely no problems at all until 6 days before 40th birthday.

Have lower back pain, swelling in groin and pain in psoas muscle cant walk, stand or carry anything for too long.

I am seeing a chiropractor and do the floor exercises stretches only in Darcey Bussells 'pilates for life' this reaches me to a peak of being unable to do very much at all but really helps to minimize the pain.

Oh yes I am now 43 and am on a waiting list to see a scoliosis specialist. From what I can gather you can get pain killing injections rather than surgery as an option also.

I know what you mean about not being able to do things though, my boyfriend is very handsome (looks like a young iggy pop) and I get paranoid that he is going to leave me for somone who is not disabled as I was an active sexy young looking chick until all this happened and we'd only been together for 6 months when my right hip, groin and lower back just seized up suddenly, (whilst doing full on physical work on a market stall).

Anyonelse had symptom free life and then a sudden seizing up scenario?

          Pain And Support

I too am 45 and the injections do nothing and there has to be some sort of device that one can wear to give relief from that crooked falling over feeling. Something you can wear for awhile to put some preesure on your upper curve and mid and lower back. I find myself while sitting putting my hand behind my back to apply pressure into my rotating rib curve. I am also taking Neurotin and tring to stretch and do yoga moves each day, but it is sad when you can't do anything to control that rotation. My cuvre is probably at the high 60 degree range....
