    ASCO treatment

    Shaun:

I've checked out that site consisting of chiropractic, massage, nutrition, vibration, nerve stimulation and exercises. Nothing on it is has been proven in studies to PERMANENTLY effect the course of scoliosis.

Here is another link for you:

Some of the alternative stuff on that site is out and out quackery- ie "colonics" and can be dangerous. Check it out at:

    Original scoliosis surgery 1956 T-4 to L-2 ~100 degree thoracic (triple)curves at age 14. NO hardware-lost correction.
Anterior/posterior revision T-4 to Sacrum in 2002, age 60, by Dr. Boachie-Adjei @Hospital for Special Surgery, NY = 50% correction

Thanks Karen, no surprise there I guess

I was mostly interested in the section where they said they could relax muscles without the patient having to move any body parts. Being able to relax and stretch out the short stiff muscles that are pulling the spine I personally think is important.

I've never had faith in chiropractic (scam), massage, or vibration. All those things will feel good but they certainly won't make any difference to a curved spine. Nutrition of course is important to maintain the strength of the spine, but it cannot reverse the condition.

        Personal Experience With Asco

My daughter is 12 years old and had a curve of 11 thoracic and 15 lumbar. I took her to the ASCO treatment with Dr. Formisano in Chester, NJ. She did it diligently and also did her home exercises. After 6 weeks, her curve decreased to 8 thoracic and 8 lumbar. That is a big difference. In my estimation, the therapy was very successful and took her out of the bracing category for the time being. She is following up with her exercises. I would highly recommend it and thank G-d that something alternative is available. She also got much stronger and her posture improved.

With curves at 11 and 15 at age 12, your child would have fallen into observation treatment category. Bracing would not have been prescribed . There was a good chance that the curve could have measured the same or even slight correction as in your case without any treatment. Note that the change to 8 and falls into the error range of Cobb measurement.

I am not convinced of the treatment.
